I hope someone on theese forums has some insight. I have been keeping tabs on AMD apus and gpus, of particular note, Mantle enabled games seem to be much less cpu bound. There was word from someone that an 8350 downclocked to 2 GHz was still gpu bound on a 290 with mantle enabled.
Sounds great, but the new Kaveri APU will only have 4 cores to play with, even though those cores have higher ipc, will there be a material performance penalty by only have 4 steamroller cores vs 8 piledriver cores?
If yes, then the 8350 seems like the better option. If no, then Kaveri seems like the better option. It was mentioned that mantle enabled games allow for asynchronous gpu scaling, so the gpu in kaveri is additive with a dedicated GCN gpu(s) in the system. If the cpu is not a bottleneck, then the fact that the APU can throw some gpu performance in on top of the cpu would mean it would be the superior gaming cpu.
But this is all speculation, I have no hard data, someone at AMD must know more, but will they say anything?
