My laptop has a vga port and I bought a vga and dvi adaptor for the dvi to hdmi cord to connect to my hdtv that only has hdmi ports besides rca's and usb's.

I have all the cords hooked up, go in to adjust my screen resolution and it shows that there are 2 monitors there but when I try to  apply it to extend my desktop, a window pops up asking me if I am sure or it will revert my settings. Click yes and it still reverts it and I cant figure anything else out to get it to extend or for it to stay enabled.

I have gone to my catalyst control center and it wont let me force tv detection. I dont know if my graphics card just isnt good enough.? Radeon Xpress 1150

VGA is analogue and DVI & HDMI is digital so you can't do what you are trying to do.  HDMI and DVI can be adapted since they are compatible with each other.  DVI and VGA can be converted but only if the DVI supports the analogue pins. HDMI isn't at all analogue so you can't do it.

You need an active vga to hdmi converter. If you wish your tv to play audio as well, you need a converter that that has an additional 3.5mm line-in as vga carries no audio stream. HDMI to vga adapters are cheap, but vga to hdmi converters cost around $20-30.
