Yeah... It's not all sunshine and puppies in open-source-land either. Both approaches have their merits and pitfalls. From a consumer prospective, if the stuff works and there's minimal shenanigans going on at the company behind it, then there's not much of a difference between the two really.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was some syntax or underlying mechanics taken from Mantle and included in DX12. Given the development cycles in play here, I doubt much of anything in DX12 was done in response to Mantle, and if AMD created a new API with only the intention of having a shiny new toy to go with their new GPUs, that's..... sort of depressing.
