I bought this 7970 in February 2014. I had to RMA it about a week later due to card failure (a problem acknowledged by XFX) and received a new card from the new model run. Well, a couple of weeks ago I started getting artifacts in games, which I attributed to higher ambient temps, so I just upped my fan speeds and that took care of it. Then I started getting that oh so annoying buzzing noise, and the artifacts returned. Monitoring the fan speed in MSI Afterburner (thankfully it is the fan speed which it reports), at 25% speed (under no load), it turns around 600RPM. At 100%, it only spins at about 2500RPM, and is quite annoying, and ineffective. XFX seems to be debating on if they will accept an RMA or replace the cooler since the serial number is different from what I registered it as, and XFX lost all of their records last year when they switched to a new site.

So yea, saved about $20 by going with XFX over Sapphire, but with 2 problems in a year and a half? I'm through with them.

Hope your third card lucky.

Even if they do just send me a new cooler it still cost me $9 for some AS5...I've still got half a tube of IC Diamond 24K, but you can't use that on a GPU. When AMD gets the 20nm series R9 300 series out (next year, thank you TSMC) I might have to ebay this and upgrade...

Got a message from XFX today, they are sending me a replacement cooler. No timetable on its arrival, but I hope it's soon, having to play every game in windowed mode sucks...

Windowed mode???,but,if ya gotta play.

Curious about your mention of 300?card?.

R11 3xx series?

Would have to offer exceptional(software/hardware) improvements before i consider upgrade.

Haven't needed to o.c. current card.Didn't think upgrade? to "R" was worth it.

See what FC4 and other upcoming games, can push the limits.

The market seems to be focusing on 4K now. I don't think there is a single GPU (with the exception of CF and SLI configs) out there that could run a demanding title maxed out at 60 fps, not r9 290x, not even Nvidia's Titan. So we do need more powerful gpu's.

Realistically, I think feasible 4K is still a year away. To handle the kinds of load 4K places on the system, we are going to need a Mantle-like API, which DirectX 12 will supposedly bring. We will also need to stop supporting developers who push out games which are coded like crap so we won't have another DICE fiasco (among others). Although the prices of 4K displays are dropping quickly, the Samsung 28" U28D590D is only $599.99, and FreeSync to eliminate the need for a constant frame rate, its getting closer by the day.

Received my new cooler today. It appears the guys at XFX just ripped a cooler off a duff card someone had returned, as the thermal pads, were already indented, the fans dusty, the heatsink appeared scorched in one place, and the copper plate for the GPU was gouged from having been cleaned of TIM (these guys never heard of Arcticlean). Did the trick though, doesn't pass 73°C under MSI Kombustor (fuzzy test) load, compared to >95°C under normal gaming load with the other cooler. And this is with the AS5 far from set yet.

Well, this cooler is not without its faults. The rear fan will buzz between 56%-75% fan speed, but under MSI Kombustor (fuzzy), it doesn't get even close to 80°C at 55% fan speed, so I can live with it.
