Hello AMD forum,

I've been experiencing a problem that is really annoying me and I cant seem to be able to fix it by myself. While gaming the display driver either crashes and restores itself or my computer just shuts down and wont turn back on unless I turn my PSU on/off.  This occurs since I downloaded Far Cry 3 and started that up. It also happens with BF 3 now.

PC Specs: Phenom II X4 965

Club 3D Radeon HD 6970 Dual fan edition

Asus M5 A99X EVO Mainboard

550W PSU

Windows 7/8 (Just recently switched to 8, Problem only occured with Far Cry 3 as I was using W7)

I've already tried the 12.10 and the 12.11(b8) drivers with completly removing them via Driver Fusion and CCleaner. Also tried this: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=444&threadid=161193&enterthread=y

I sincerly hope you guys can provide my with a solution to this problem!

In a couple days FC3 will be released in the Americas so hopefully not, but maybe you'll be joined by others with the same issue.

In the meantime, I keep seeing reference to a new AMD driver tomorrow, however I'd also check the Steam forum for this game to see what people in your neck of the woods are experiencing, maybe there's already a fix.

Ty for answering, I've already checked pretty much every forum (FC3 specific and Ubisoft) but nobody seems to be having the same problem. Really sucks since now it also happens with other games.

What is the make and model of your PSU? What are the high temperatures recorded by GPU-Z whilst you are playing the game?

König Electronics CMP-PSU550W/S, just bought that not too long ago since a corsair 850W died on me. Last time I checked temperatures while playing BF3 with the CCC and it was at ~68°

Edit: I just installed the 850W corsair PSU again since I never fully knew if it was dead. Im on desktop right now and will see if its stable.

Edit 2: I played a round of bf 3 lasted for about 15 mins. Everything went fine until the end screen. GPU fan went up like crazy and then a new crash message appeared. (BF3 exe has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware something something). After that standard display driver crashed and restored msg. I looked at GPU temps. from time to time and they were about 65-74° and in the end screen at 82° shortly before the crash. Really confusing...

I joined the forum just to say I'm having the same issue as the OP. I have two 6970's in Crossfire, and the official 12.10 Catalyst drivers cause my system to crash.

Specifically, Explorer.exe (Windows Explorer) crashes randomly when using Catalyst 12.10 drivers. The Windows Event Log attributes it to atiumm64.dll. I have tried clean installs—they don't help. I'm currently on 12.6 because it was my last good configuration. I have to recover my computer from a backup image because it did so much damage.

I'd really, really like to be able to update my drivers and not have my system stability harmed.

I'd like to try the new Far Cry 3 beta drivers (12.11 beta 11), but I'm extremely cautious now. I don't think anything's been done to address the Explorer.exe crash (or even acknowledge its existence?). It only started in 12.10.

Can anyone help me and the OP with this issue?
