I'm a bit of a noob with Radeon having used the green N for the past decade or so.  Loving the HD7850, but I have a question about game profiles.

I see how I can make my own 3D App Settings for a given exe, but I'm used to the other guys providing premade ones with optimal settings for the most popular games.  I thought thats what I was downloading for the Radeon here:

http://www2.ati.com/drivers/hotfix/catalyst_application_profiles/AMD_Catalyst_12.11_CAP2.exe

But after installing I still dont see any pre-made profiles (in fact, I dont really understand what that installs).  Can someone please bring me up to speed?   Thanks.

Just install them and they will be used automatically. You dont have to do anything.

So....why is it a separate download then?  Wouldnt they just build this into the CCC/Drive package?

No...they are seperate. Uninstall the old CAP before installing the new...they are cumulative. Uninstall them using 'remove a program' on your PC.

Is there a release notes anywhere outlining which apps have profiles in the package?

Yes...on every one of them. You would have to go back a year or so to check the optimizations in each CAP. As I said, they are cumulative. The latest one contains all the previous changes. Just download and install the latest one and be done with it. Make sure you uninstall the old CAP before installing the new.
