newbie here please help!

ATI RADEON HD 4550

i had xp and upgraded to win 7 and now my microphone is not working (i use ventrilo). i have the HDMI hooked up to my monitor along with the regular monitor plug. it shows digital audio (HDMI) as my default device with green check mark. however when i open AMD catalyst it says my window settings dont support default audio. also when i go to the recording tab in the sound menu it says no audio devices are installed... can someone please point me in the right direction?? thanks for your help!

still having this issue here is the error message when i open Ventrilo

 

Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device.
DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER. No sound driver is available for use
