I bought a new Radeon 7870 and cannot get sound through HDMI except via the most ludicrous procedure. To get sound, only temporarily, I need to enable the LCD TV, then reboot (the AMD audio will not appear as connected or available), and then I can watch something.

However if I disconnect the HDMI, and reconnect, no sound again until I reboot. This is a PAIN.

I have the same problem. I have a Radeon 7700HD and a Samsung TV. The TV is connected to the graphic card via HDMI but the PC doesnt recognize the TV as an active audio device.

Yes, that is exactly what happens.

On mine I set the HDMI TV to default playback device (everything else is DISABLED). Workin' good

Then unplugged the hdmi cable and replugged it. Audio still good.

So.. there's two differences here:

1) You both have VIA audio and it doesn't work

2) Mine works and doesn't have VIA audio.

There could be a number of issues that might cause this, but I'd look at VIA drivers first. Check their forums.

Of course the easiest solution is don't unplug the hdmi cable.

a little anecdote. To do this, my HDMI TV was set to extended and then the audio was enabled. When I unplugged it, the extended screen switched to the other (3rd) monitor,  and replugging the HDMI brought it back as extended complete with sound.  kinda cool.

I am getting the same problems! It was fine when my computer was Windows 7 but as soon as I updated to Win 8 I started getting these issues. SO it tells me that the drivers are not compatible with Win 8 and Samsung TV/Monitors. This is a HUGE problem.

I have a 7970. Any idea when this will be fixed?

Let me ask you something obvious, just in case.If you are using the onboard audio, which is Realtek in most cases, have you istalled the ATI HDMI Audio Device driver from the Realtek downloads page?

Also, have you set HDMI to be the default aoutput in your system?

I received a reply from Tech Support and it fixed the problem.

They first asked me to uninstall the AMD drivers, all of them, using the Express Uninstall option. I did so and rebooted.

I then used Driver Cleaner Pro at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/system_cleanup/driver_cleaner_pro.cfm (they sent this link), selected all the AMD/ATI options.

I then went to this page: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

and selected the drivers WITH .NET 4.0 Support. I never saw this alternative elsewhere.

Since then, the HDMI on and off has worked flawlessly.

Sadly the problem returned. I emailed tech support again, detailing how to reproduce the problem, but so far no reply.

I grabbed the latest yesterday and did NOT solve the problem.  Looks like they have NOT update the package yet according to the results I got and I use DriverFusion to clean everything out in Safe Mode BEFORE installing.

I can't believe how slow AMD is to respond to this since it's a major ***kup.  Very frustrating.

I have been fighting the same issue for months.  I think I found the culprit.

Check the Menu on your TV for an INLINK setting, and make sure it is turned on.  This is the setting that communicates with your video card or other connected devices.  (The TV mfg may call it something different, but look for an option that provides the same functionality)

3. Make sure it is enabled for TV Power on and power off.

Hope that helps.

Nick

hi

i got the same problems with an lg tv and windows 7 64.

i think this does not have anything to do with the audio card you are using. it does not matter if my external sound device is attached or not and whether onboard sound is acitvated or not.

with the 13.1 driver i could get sound to work with a reboot while tv is on.

now i installed the beta 5 driver and first it worked good but now i cannot get sound to work at all. no matter how i restart and what i configure in tv or pc...

i think there is something really wrong with amd hdmi audio...

it did not show any audio device in windows mixer anymore. but drivers are correctly installed and working...

when will the 13.2 be launched?

will it fix this? (does not think so because there are hdmi audio issues with amd cards since ever, if you ask google )

Never. AMD stopped providing monthly updates a while ago. You can expect a 13.3, but a 13.4 is more likely.
