AMD just released the Catalyst™ Un-Install Utility to help clean your system of any existing AMD Catalyst Drivers.  This will help you cleanly install new drivers.  Here is the link:

A thread was been created for it in the How-To & FAQs category.

http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=444&threadid=163552&enterthread=y

I did lock that thread.  I have also created a News Announcement that I will leave up at the top of the forum for the next few days or weeks.

Does look great, no more DriverSweeper/DriverCleaner/DriverFusion nonsense. It is something which is longggggg overdue. Going to wait for some more feedback though to see if it is as thorough as the customary programs, and really doesn't touch the chipset drivers.

Can you tell me if the drivers are first uninstalled as usual, then this utility is run to get the remanents (as Driver Fusion was)? Or, do you run this utility to uninstall everything and that's it?

EDIT: To answer my own question, this utility does no more than remove what is normally removed using the computers "remove a program"> 'Express uninstall all AMD software and the installer'  feature. Running Driver Fusion displays the same amount of left-over entries.

Unfortunately, it just replaces having to go to add/remove (or 'remove a program')....it leaves the same amount of left-over files. Driver Fusion gets the rest, as usual.

Is there any explanation on what happens that causes my Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) install to be missing the Windows power options after using the utility? I've seen a few warnings now at two other forums with others also having this issue.

Hadn't noticed it until I read this post.

Also, after using the utility I can't open my Prefetch folder or delete LastGood folder and many other things (ones which require admin rights even though I'm using an admin account) and the Network folder is now called 'Computers and Devices' for some reason?

I think AMD needs to address this officially, but just an FYI to anyone before using this tool. The Catalyst™ Un-Install Utility will cause serious problems to any Windows 8 installation.

I have a partial list of issues this "utility" causes, but for now the solution seems to be reinstalling your Windows 8 completely.

  • Loss of all Power Plans
  • Loss of rights to uninstall or change install programs
  • No User Acccess Control (UAC) rights
  • Loss of Admin rights
  • Inability to enter Safe Mode or Advanced Startup
  • Language Bar will display DLL File names
  • Personaliization window will display wrong theme names, some themes missing
  • AND tons of other registery issues.

Thanks AMD!

On the download page for the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (see link at top of thread), it calls out that it is supported on Windows 7 only.

"This standalone uninstallation utility will clean your system of any existing AMD Catalyst™ drivers to prepare your PC for the clean installation of a new driver version. Currently supports Windows 7 at this time."

Yep, it sure does. If you are like me, and the dozens of other people out there, that saw that little detail too late, you're apparently in for a fun OS reinstall.

Judging by the number of people having issues with this tool on Guru3D, and the microsoft forum below, something more than a little note on the download page would have been helpful.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=373750

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/error-message-when-i-try-to-change-any-setting-or/d1147af8-f98b-4f8c-999c-dfd4ba212877?page=2&tm=1369946140088&tab=AllReplies#tabs

Along those lines any ideas on correcting the problems caused by the tool without a reinstall would be helpful.

What do you think AMD should do, take a trip back in time to the 1990s and put up a big rainbow colored flashing banner saying WINDOWS 7 ONLY?

Installers can be setup to check for a particular OS before proceeding. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but this really is a basic utility/installer function, and something that should be included if the tool in windows 8 so completely hoses the system.

Have you used the AMD Uninstall Utility?  The Driver Fusion Utility?
