uninstall old drivers, restart, run registry sweep, install...it just seems like such a hassle each time, why can't it just update like all the other programs?

You can do that....where did you get the idea you couldn't? Lots of people install the new drivers over the old ones. Having to restart is a Microsoft thing.

Supposedly that was one new "innovation" for Windows 8, "restart-less graphics driver updates", but I've just installed the new drivers over the old every time unless I am changing cards or rolling back and never had a problem. Might I ask what you do that the 20 seconds of a restart procedure is so critical?

I'm still old school and uninstall old drivers, not just graphics. Driver run closer to the core of Windows than most software and I prefer avoiding Murphy's Law as much as possible. To me this means doing things by the numbers whenever possible, and as has been said, Windows needs to re-boot, as it does with many things, to finilaise the uninstall and re-install.

I don't use registry sweeping/cleaning,  but when changing brands, or if I had a borked install, I will also run Driver Sweeper/Fusion to be sure I start with a clean slate.

Haven't used that method since Windows XP times. And never used driver sweeper bullshit. It's dangerous and can fu** up your system badly.

The other day, I was troubleshooting my buddies computer parts. I put his 3870x2 into my win8 machine (replaced 5870). When I started it up, win 8 beeped and booped and beeped an booped and presto, it was working like a charm. Amazing, didn't have to touch drivers at all.

As mentioned, I only remove drivers if downgrading them.
