GPU: XFX HD 7850 core edition 2GB, no overclocking on my part.

Catalyst driver version: 13.1

I've experienced this BSOD several times now.

How to reproduce it: Play Skyrim for an hour or longer (has to be a lenghty period of time), exit, start Firefox, BSOD with the exact same error message.

What I've done to troubleshoot this:

1) uninstall Catalyst Control Center in safe mode

2) use Driver Fusion to clean orphan files and registry entry

3) reinstall Catalyst Control Center.

I have Net Framework 4.0.

I just bought this card a few days ago. Is this a driver issue or should I RMA the GPU?

If it worked with a previous Catalyst version, use that and report the issue on the issue reporting form. If none work, you probably have a hardware issue somewhere.

Do you mean downgrade to an older driver version? Which one should I try? I only got this card a few days ago so the only version of catalyst I've installed is 13.1.

I've also been stress testing this GPU with Kombuster (2 hours, probaby should test it for longer) and there is no indication of anything wrong. The highest temperature I've seen is 66 degress so overheating does not appear to be an issue.

Try 12.11 beta first, people usually like it.

So, I did try 12.11, and just yesterday tried 13.2 beta 3.

12.11 did not elminate the BSOD, but did fix some minor artifacting I was seeing in Skyrim.

13.2 beta 3, on the other hand, has worsened the problem. BSOD with that error message now occur when I am playing Skyrim. The entire screen artifacts with grey, black and white thin triangles pointing towards the center of the screen. I don't see any spike in temperature with Afterburner. Unfortunately, I can't reliably reproduce it, and it never occurs during my stress benchmark tests with Kombuster (so I suspect it's a driver issue).

So I filled out the issue reporting form....but it was a survey?!? I experienced 3 more BSOD's tonight, with Catalyst 13.1. Should I try to RMA the GPU?

BSOD's are not easily reproducible. So far, it's happened only when I play Skyrim, after maybe 40+ minutes of gaming (but not always, as I've gone longer than that without experiencing the BSOD). What happens is that I would see artifacting on the screen: typically long, thin, triangles pointing to the center of the screen, when the artifacting occurs there is a GPU temperature spike (it goes to around 66 degrees celcius), and then the BSOD. The first BSOD I experienced, there was no artifacting. I had exited Skyrim and launched FireFox, and was immediately hit with a BSOD with that error message.

Using MSI Afterburner to keep track of the GPU temp, it normally does not go above 60 - 62 degrees celcius during Skyrim (idles at 27 - 30 degrees celcius). I can't reproduce the BSOD using GPU stress testing utilities like Furmark and MSI Kombuster (highest temperature seen is 66 degress celcius).

Driver versions I've used:

1) installed new GPU, uninstalled old nvidia driver, cleaned orphan nividia driver files in safe mode using Driver Sweeper, installed catalyst driver version 13.1. Experienced first BSOD in Skyrim.

2) uninstalled catalyst 13.1, cleaned orphan files in safe mode using Driver Sweeper, installed catalyst driver 12.11 beta.

3) uninstalled 12.11 beta, cleaned orphan files in safe mod using Driver Sweeper, installed catalyst driver 13.2 beta 3.

4) uninstalled 13.2 beta 3, used the new AMD driver cleaner utility in safe mode. Installed catalyst driver 13.2 beta 5.

I experienced BSOD in Skyrim with all these driver versions based on the pattern described above, but never during stress testing using MSI Kombuster of Furmark. I've tried reseating the GPU to the second PCI-E slot on my mobo. memtest88 8 passes without errors to rule out memory issues.

Every time I (re)install a new driver version, it will work nicely for a day or two, then BSODs. The beta drivers after 13.1 solve some minor artifacting I was seeing in Skyrim.

Have mini dumps if anyone wants to read them.

I just tried beta 6. Wow, it made things worse (and I didn't think that would be possible). I actually could reproduce the BSOD with beta 6, just by playing Skyrim for more than 5 minutes. Went back to beta 5 and seems more stable (at least only BSOD once in a few days....).

I ended up RMAing the GPU to the manufacturer after using SpeedFan and HWAInfo to eliminate the possibility of overheating, memtest to test my RAM stocks (8 passes), even got a PSU tester to make sure my PSU was working fine). The manufacturer tested it and said they found nothing wrong with the card, but that they would send me a replacement of the same model regardless. After installing the replacement card, I am still getting BSODs (13.3 beta 3) with the exact same error message.

I feel like an idiot for buying an AMD card....

AMD doesn't make video cards. You bought a Sapphire or MSI or whatever card.

I didn't say AMD manufactures video cards. Why would you think that?
