i'm having issues with making my two graphic cards work in the same PC.

my specs :

Asus p5q3 Deluxe / Intel Core2 Quad Q9550  @ 3399 MHz / Corsair 16 GB DDR3-1600 / Intel SSD 120 GB / Club3D Radeon HD 7850 / Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 / Windows 7 SP1 ultimate 64bit

I've tried installing the catalyst drivers (13.2 beta) for the 7850, which in itself works perfectly, but when I install drivers for the 4870x2 (13.1 legacy), everything starts crashing and sometimes BSOD. Then I tried installing only the drivers trough windows device manager, but same thing.

is there any way I can make these cards work together? because the goal is to connect my two screens to these two cards.

You can't have 13.2 and 13.1L at the same time, as there are files with identical fine names in those packages. Though Windows 7 does support multiple display drivers for multiple video cards, it still doesn't support having multiple files with the same name in the same folder. So when you install 13.1, you overwrite half 13.2. You either have to find a single package which supports both cards, or just forget this strange config.

Question: Why don't you connect the 2 screens to a single card?

Well because my two monitors have a VGA connector, which i converted to DVI. but apparently only one works with the DVI-I on the 7850.

so I re-installed my old 4870x2 to connect the second monitor.

first time everything worked fine, until I rebooted.then everything started to crash.

what's the best thing I do to make an extended desktop then?

connectors on the 7850 : DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, 2 mini displayports

Catalyst 12.3 is the first one to support the 7000 series and it supports the 4000 series as well. You could try that for both cards. 12.4 should work as well.

Alternative solutions:

7850 only + 1 monitor on DVI-D (needs support by the monitor)

7850 only + active DVI-D to VGA adapter

4870 X2 only + 2 monitors on DVI-I using standard dongles

Sell the 4870 X2 and one of your current monitors and buy a more modern monitor from the money you get

I thought about getting an active adapter. will it work?

tried selling de 4870 but not much interest, no DX11 support...

looks like the 12.4 drivers worked.

removed everything with the amd cleanup until, installed the pack and everyhing runs as it should. but what's really weird, is that it still says 13.2 version in the software tab of the control center??
