Hello everyone, this is a problem that's driving me nuts.

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 and everything worked fine out of the box. I was using original MS driver (8.56.1-081104a-071877E-ATI).

Then, I downloaded latest Catalyst Drivers (13.1) and the problem that I have now is that every time I restart my Windows, the next boot I have "no video signal" (monitor goes to energy saving), but my Windows loads fine (I can hear the Windows Startup sound).

2 things I noticed: when this happen, I have no video in BIOS and the GPU cooler does not slow down when Windows loads, as is usual.

Then, with no video, I am able to log into Windows and restart using "shutdown /r". When the computer restarts, hooray, I have video. But if I restart again, the same things happen all over again. This is 100% reproduceable in my system, happens every time.

Summary: I have video in 1 of 2 WIndows boots, every time.

I reverted my drivers to 8.56.1-081104a-071877E-ATI through Windows, and the problem stopped! So, I guess this is somehow Driver related.

I am willing to try everything you guys recommend me. I wish I could boot normally with latest drivers.

Use an older driver set.

That would be one of my last options since newer drivers are a lot faster in games, maybe someone had this problem and fixed it.

It's connected through DVI. The Gpu has 2 of these and I tried both with same results.

Using an older driver set is a standard diagnostic step. It takes all of 10 minutes to AMD Driver Cleanup the existing set and install an older one.

Sorry the delay to answer back.

I 've been trying older drivers and I can confirm that all 11.12 or newer drivers have the same behavior. Now I am trying even older ones and I let you know.

Meanwhile I tried other things like disabling overdrive, disable the CCC, use alternate DVI mode, etc, with no luck.

I'm gonna keep testing and I let you know the results.

Hello,

I tried many, many older drivers and the only one I can positively be sure to work correctly is the one that comes with original Win7 instalation. Some drivers (11.1 for example) do work most of time, but in the long run the problem appeared randomly.

Can I take some conclusion of these drivers tests? I am lost here.

If you are positive that you have cleaned out all of the old drivers off of your system and you can reproduce this at-will, I would recommend that you submit the issue to AMD through the official process...

Done that! In fact, I did it through http://www.amd.com/legacyreport, because that's the link indicated in the 4870 x2 driver download page.

 

Hope that they can reproduce the issue too and correct it.

Meanwhile I decided to use the latest drivers and I will try to reboot less, rsrs.
