Here's the story. I'm a networking major at RIT and although im not an expert im also pretty computer literate.

After fresh installing windows 8 and catalyst drivers, I'f i try to remove and install new ones it always ruins my windows 8 install, or at best BSOD's and nothing installs.

Running sfc checker results in unrepairable errors. Now I've used windows 8 on and off since its inception. I was forced to go back to windows 7 because of this very issue.

It's not a hardware issue per say. Why i say this is this:

I've had it happent with two different ASUS motherboards. P8z77 V PRO and my current ASUS MAXIMUS Formula V.

I've had it happen with two different power supplies. My current xfx 1050w GOLD and my older coolermaster silent pro 1000w.

I've had it happen with one 7970 and also when they are in crossfire.

I've had it happen with three different sets of memory.

I've ran chkdsk, memtest 86 for 12 hours, prime 95 for 12 hours. All pass with no errors.

It's not a heat issue as my whole system is watercooled and my max cpu temps are 60c and gpu temps max are 40c. Vrm temps never go aboce 60c.

I've turned off overclocks, tried with them on.  I've tried using cc cleaner and safe mode uninstalls. I've tried not using those utilities.

I'm basically at my wits end. When I use windows 7 I never have these issues.

I don't use the catalyst uninstall utility as it ruins windows 8.

The initial driver install goes fine. As long as its a fresh windows 8 install. But if i try to uninstall or update after that its bsods and corrupted filesystems that are unrepairable.

I've had to resort to having a system image that has all my files before I install any AMD video card drivers.

It has happened with all versions up to the 13.8 beta 2.

I've updated bioses, reset bioses. I'm kinda tired of having to reimage my hardrive everytime I want to stay current on drivers.

Is anyone aware of this issue ?

O i've also had it happen with two different CPU's. My current 3770k and my old 3550k.

My current setup:

Windows 8 Pro fully updated

i7 3770k

Gskill trident series ddr3 2400 2 x 8gb

Saphire dual x 7970 with boost x2

2 vertext 3 ssd's in raid 0 firmware current

2 toshiba 3 tb harddrives in raid 0

1 wd blue 290gig backup

1 wd passport !tb

Asus dvd rw

xfx gold 1050w

Switch 810 case cougar fans out the ying yang

1 360 rad 1 140 rad 1 120 rad  raystorm block, ek 7970 universal gpu blocks, d5 pump, etc etc...

ALL drivers and firmware/BIOs are current release version via vendors.

Fast boot disabled or enabled both same thing.

Well if you ever run that driver sweeper software under Windows 8 you will hose it up. I use Windows 8 Pro and have had no issues like that.

Based on all the combinations of hardware it seems that you have tried several different setups.

The one problem I did have was when I updated from Windows 7 to 8. The issues went away after I did a Windows 8 refresh. I have been on 13.1, 13.4 and currently use 13.6 Beta 2.

Ya like i said i tried with and without using driver sweeper. I have also done frsh installs everytime as I don't trust upgrade instals. :/

Thing is I paid for the windows 8 and wan't to use it. I get free windows copies via msdn agreements but I actually paid for this one. :/

Driver packages are designed to be updated directly. You mess it up when you try removing them. Don't do it. Just install the next one on top of the current one. You'll have no more issues.
