Slight problem here....

I have an XFX Double D Radeon 7970 running and recently there has been some odd behaviour.

When I turn on the PC, GPU-Z and the AMD monitoring tools report that the card is running at over 90% load, with temps going to 76 degrees. This doesn't seem to go down at all over time, and the noise from the fan seems to confirm that it's running fast.

In Sys info, the load seems to be isolated to graphic engine 6 and none other.

Checked with a couple of process monitoring tools and there are no programs reporting that they're putting this strain on the GPU. I was initially thinking a virus or malware, but so far nothing.

At idle the tools are reporting a card clock of 300 with a memory clock of 150, but still the load states over 90%.

Here's the kicker. If I uninstall the catalyst drivers completely, the load drops again (also the fan noise drops as well, so the card is definitely idling down). Then I can reinstall the drivers and the load will stay at 0-2% at idle until I reboot. Once I reboot, the problem is back and I have to repeat the process.

Virus scans and malware scans reveal nothing. Any ideas at all would be helpful here.

Basic system specs as follows:

Intel q6600 quad core

4GB DDR2

Coolermaster 1000w psu

XFX double d radeon 7970 card

What scans have you run? I would recommend Malwarebytes.

I've run Spybot, Malwarebytes, Trend Micro's Housecall (just to be certain) and Windows security essentials so far. Nothing shows up as the offender....

The fact that it seems to trigger on reboot and only with the catalyst drivers seems to rule out a hardware failure as well.

Have you tried previous drivers or 13.8 beta 2?

Having the same cards but with no problems.  Would NOT be concerned on temps...monitor them in Catalyst and adjust fans manually if desired to ~ 50%.

What else (info on OS, motherboard and BIOS version) have you in your system?

Would upgrade memory to 8Gb++ DDR 3 per motherboard abilities and limitations for a general performance increase.  Very strong GPU and PSU but weak memory and relatively old cpu and unknown mobo.

Try system restore, choose the earliest restore point.

I had that kind of problem before, i don't know what kind of virus it is but the problem's  solved after i did a system restore.
