The HD 4000, 3000 & 2000 series card fall into GPUs which only support WDDM 1.1. which Windows 8 did support when it first came out. While Windows 8.1 will only support WDDM 1.3 and 1.2 models.

This is bad news for you but that is how it is.

But 8.1 is an update for 8. So it has to support all same hardware.

It means that for a system to be Certified to Windows 8.1 the GPU has to have a WDDM 1.3 driver, and for a GPU driver to be WHQL certified for Windows 8.1 it has to be WDDM 1.3. However, I haven't seen anything that says Windows 8.1 will block WDDM 1.2/1.1 drivers from being installed.

I guess if they do it will not be till release, but I see that Preview Driver only support down to 5000 series. Maybe someone else has a different view on that.

So I would try and contact AMD to voice your view on leaving you out.

But if you upgrade you might be stuck with a default driver or maybe what you have now. All I know is most of my friends and clients had issues moving from Windows 7 to 8, I hope this upgrade goes cleaner.

Windows 8.1 is slightly different from Windows 8 even though Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 are Windows Kernel 6. Do yourself a favor and just get a HD 7770. It's cheap, efficient, quiet, and more powerful than all the legacy cards except the HD 4870x2.

Friend already uses windows 8.1 x64 and he suffers from green screen in flash videos if hardware acceleration is on and some others little annoying problems.

Is there any specific feature in 8/8.1 you would like to use? Because the best and cheapest solution is sticking with Windows 7. It's supported at least until 2020.
