When I install the 13.10 beta 2 driver, the temperature on my cards (2 x HD7990) goes through the roof.

Looking at GPU-Z, it says that 3 of the 4 GPUs are running at 99%, when idling.  That would explain the temperatures.  Oddly, the fans just sit at 40-50%.  Not sure why they wouldn't be spinning up to 100% to cool the cards off?

I had exactly the same issue with 13.8 beta 2.

If I roll the drivers back to 13.4 I have no issues, GPU load shows 0% when idling and temperatures are between 40-50 degrees.

Anyone else experienced this issue?

Using 13.10 beta 2 driver:

13.10 driver

Using 13.4 driver: 13.4 driver

For reference, I have raised this on the beta feedback form.  I'm more just curious as to whether anyone else is experiencing the same problem.

To me, this sounds like some problem with "Designed for the ultra-efficient AMD ZeroCore Power technologythe AMD Radeon™ HD 7990 GPU shuts down its secondary at idle for unbelievably cool and quiet operation", in that it's actually doing the opposite.

Since 13.8, I have had to do this:

I use to experience the second card spinning up just in firefox.

I can confirm that this behaviour is not specific to the beta drivers.  I just tried installing 13.9, and I get the same behaviour, with the Crossfire GPUs all running at 99% and getting extremely hot, when idle.

So it seems to be all drivers since 13.4.  Is no-one else seeing this?!

Hi, I have the same problem but I dont have 2 cards just one HD7970Ghz Edition and I look every where to find the solution but no one know what is the problem. I thought I will give the card on guarantee because something is going on with the card but yesterday after over 2h of installing and uninstalling the drivers I open task manager and find the program named atidxx when I close the task boom the activity of card drop from 94% to 0% and temp go down to 34 from 75 in idle. I open the "Launch" dont know how it is named in english versions of windows (start button + R on keybord) and open msconfig go to launch bookmark and find the proces the name is 'AtiDriverStart' and unmatch it. Dont know is it the problem with drivers or some kind of virus. I delete the file. Hope I help and if someone have some info about this file and proces write.

I forgot to add that there are 2 files in the folder atidxx and atiedxx. You can find them in C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\ATI Technologies

After updating to 13.9 from 13.4 my desktop colours randomly set to default and my single 5770 goes bonkers for no apparent reason. Load is irractic between like 50 - 100% and temps of 60 - 70 degrees Celcius with no apps running. Not cool.

Only way I can stop it is to click 'Log off' or 'restart/shutdown', the second I click those the colours go back to normal and GPU load and temp drop to normal - it must be a process that suddenly starts to make this happen on my system.

I can confirm that 13.11 Beta 1 also has this same problem:

I also tried what you said Beneksz, but when I killed the atiesrxx.exe and atieclxx.exe (which I think you meant rather than atiedxx.exe) then the GPU Load stayed at 99% for me.

Again, downgrading back to 13.4 resolves the problem.

Issue logged (again).  Haven't heard anything back from AMD yet tho. :-(

13.11 fixed the issue I was seeing about 99% gpu load when running firefox. I did not try any games. I still did the manual registry change of enableUlps to 0 though, since that fixed the older drivers, and I did not want to mess with 99% gpu load on second card any more.

I get the same problem with 13.9 as well (two 7950s running full tilt).  Downgraded to 13.4.  I put in bug report and I'll wait for 13.10.

This is really strange thing. I'm sure that the file name is atiedxx.exe and I use 13.10 beta version and everything is good after delete the proces and delete the file. Still have to wait for solution from amd but I dont get any feedback from them and now the new beta is uploaded but dont wanna try with it for now when my card working ok.

I tried the very latest 13.11 beta 9.2 drivers.  Same thing.  However, this time I tried disabling ULPS (Ultra Low Power State), and bingo.  Problem solved.  So clearly ULPS is for some reason making the unused GPUs run at 100% instead of switching them off.  Doh!  Not very good AMD.

It's a shame.  I suppose this just means that the cards will be using more power when idling than they are designed to.  Still, at least the drivers are now usable, which is the main thing.

I used this app to turn off ULPS, in case anyone else has the same problem: http://hwbot.org/newsflash/1877_amd_ulps_(ultra_low_power_state)_disable_tool_by_youngpro

In case anyone is wondering, this bug still exists in the latest 13.11 beta 9.5. The latest version I can find without this problem is 13.4. This is particularly frustrating because I can't take advantage of the new frame pacing for Crossfire setups without one of my GPUs running full tilt for no reason.

Disabling ULPS does in fact work around the issue, but either that causes new issues, or the newest beta driver has a new bug, as when I tried it my FPS in Deus Ex: Human Revolution dropped considerably and started looking like a sine wave. AMD drivers are a disaster
