I tried to update new drivers for HD6950 today and kept getting package install failure on every try. I have removed old drivers using amd cleanup utility, downloaded new drivers again and again and still no success. Now the PC is really unusable as no working Catalyst version can be installed.

Looks like ATI Catalyst is totally uninstallable after this happens. Doesn't really matter what ATI GPU you use. I spent 6 hours trying to fix this and finally found an easy solution. I drove to a shop and bought NVIDIA GPU and everything works like a dream. Even upgrading drivers with just one click.

Use the forum search. This error happens if you previously f.....ed up the system by driver sweeper even though you shouldn't use it. It's not AMD's fault that you cannot maintain a computer.

Buying an nvidia cand doesn't fix the corrupted registry. Though it's a good solution for lazy, spoiled children who have so much money that it's easier to buy another card then taking 15 minutes to reinstall windows.

Are you saying that AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility destroys the registry? That's the one I used to remove the old drivers and then tried upgrading with the newer ones. I read you writing this same answer to almost everyone who had the problem and the issue remains the same after reinstalling Windows. Also people are having this problem in new PC's that have only had Windows fresh installed and nothing else. And still it is user problem and nothing wrong with the AMD software? I hope they pay you well.

Shouldn't you try to sell your software to Microsoft as it seems to find a problem with Windows that no other sw finds? I'd guess they would love to have that kind of tool.

I seriously suggest you start reding MSDN on the Windows Installer windows component/service. I'm not here to tech you basic things like how Windows works. If you don't know it, may ask why you use it in the first place?

Can you still answer to the question about AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility? So was it wrong to use that or not? Is that also kind of driver sweeper that screwes the registry. Also I have to admit that I don't know too much about Windows Installer service, but I still wonder why this problem happens also after fresh installed windows.

Btw... why the personal attacks on people who have this problem?

The AMD uninstall program is for use on computers that have Windows 7...only. As it states.

No hate on people. Hate on M$ screwing up something and another company (in this case AMD) being frowned upon for it. Unfortunately the MSI service is mandatory if you want to properly install drivers on a windows system, so there's no way around it. I might be mistaken though, but even InstallShield uses it when it comes to drivers.

Note: No personal attacks either. A personal attack would be if I said I ....ed one of your older femalie relatives.

AMD utility: Any cleaner should only be used in case you're trying to recover an already broken system which has no hope otherwise.
