Hi,

System:

GPU: HD6950 Sapphire + HD4890 not with Crossfire link

CPU: AMD FX8350

MB: GA-990FXA-UD5

OS: Windows 7  Professional 64bit SP1

I have been running this GPU setup for a while now. The reason for running two GPUs is becouse I have 3 monitors.

The setup worked fine till now, I was running the 13-4 cataclysm installation (not sure what the driver was called). And just I installed the 4890 through Windows update (since the card is no longer supported). All this worked fine.

Now with the new  13.152.1.8000 (Cataclyst 13-9) it no longer works. If I install only the drivers for the 6950 it works fine. But when I install the drivers for the 4890 through Windows Update everything starts crashing. I cannot open the CCC, flash player instantly crashes, sometimes explorer.exe crash etc.

I have tried to reinstall the drivers twice and the same thing happens. If uninstall both drivers and only the 6950 it works fine.

How can I fix this?

Edit: I have tried to install the 4890 drivers with a driver setup, that doesnt work. And I have tried to manually install the drivers by just extracting them from the setup, and that doesnt work either.

The 4000 series card is a legacy card and 6000 is still supported with newer drivers. I think you are going to have to drop back to what worked last.

The 13.9 does not support legacy cards. The other option is to pick up another 6950 to pair up and you then could use the 13.9 release.

The biggest difference is the WDDM model driver that is supported.

Thanks for the reply.

So the combo does not work because the new driver uses WDDM 1.1 and the 4000 card is not compatible with that?

Is there no way to make sure that the two cards run on two different drivers and either not affecting the other?

Hmm will have to get a new card then. Guess I cant complain, the card is more than 5 years old and still pretty decent.

The 6950 should be able to drive 3 (even more) monitors by itself. No need for another card at all. Just hook them up and remove the legacy card and you'll be able to use the latest Catalyst from now on.
