So I was recently told by a game I was trying to run that my graphics drivers were out of date. My PC came pre-loaded with something called Catalyst Control Centre that always runs in the backround and can't be uninstalled through add/remove programs. I open it up and all I see is a big stupid ad for the latest macho-man murder simulator, and a bunch of options on the side to do with desktop display and some other things I don't quite understand - no "Update drivers" button anywhere.

Then I went to the website to try there, and I had two options:

Download the 200 MB "Catalyst Software Suite" - which, as far as I'm aware, I already have, or download the newest beta driver, which I'm not comfortable doing at all.

Why can't I just download the driver by itself? Is the "Catalyst Software Suite" the same thing as the "Catalyst Control Centre"? It's all very confusing and very frustrating.

My graphics card is Radeon HD 5700 and OS is Windows 7 64 just in case that's relevent.

Specific driver and CCC versions work together and have to be updated together. If you get a version mismatch, it won't work. That's why.

As a newcomer to AMD myself, I also found that somewhat confusing. As I understood it you could simplify it as:

Catalyst Sofware Suite = Catalyst Control Center + Drivers

And yes, having a "update drivers" button in the CCC that automatically downloaded the latest stuff and installed it (especially without the need of safe mode reboots and 3rd party driver cleaner utilities) would go a long way towards user-friendliness...

No, it wouldn't, because you don't necessarily need new drivers just because there are newer ones out there.

that's something you only do when you try to resurrect a broken system. Don't ever do it on a working computer and don't ever believe everything you read on the internet.

Driver install is as user friendly as it can be: You can install new driver on top of the current without uninstalling anything.

You know that just because there is a button you are not *obliged* to click on it...
