Howdy Guys im wondering if someone here can help me out with a problem im having with a MSI R9 280x card

I recently just completed a computer build using a Msi R9 280x and have had major issues ever since firing it up ill try and describe it as best i can its a weird problem

first i ecountered this problem whilst playing wow and skyrim, the screen goes black (game sound continues) and it either goes back to the game and continues as nothing happened or it crashes to desktop with skyrim i get a message saying the gpu stopped working and restarted no other information but with WoW i get a complete desktop freeze except for windows taskbar which i can right click on and open close programs ect and basically have to restart the computer.

I have tried many things to fix this problem which i will list below

  • i was originally running 32bit windows 8.1 and upgraded to 64bit 8.1
  • i have tried lowering the core and memory clocks via teh Msi Afterburner app
  • i have tried using several different drivers i am currently using  driver version 9.14.10.01001 catalyst 13.11, (it originally when installed via the supplied disc listed it as a Radeon HD7900 series)
  • i have run WoW using directx11 and directx9 versions (currently have directx11 installed)
  • i have tried running both games at different levels of graphics quality as well
  • ive also tried different ingame graphics tweaks ie vsync on/vsync off

none of these has produced any different result i still get crashes and the crashes are completly random they might happen after 2mins or 3 hrs in game sometimes if its the one that continues back to game then i might get multiple ones. i have noticed at different times with desktop crash the GPU has hit spiked to 100% usage although im not sure if this has happened everytime

System Specs

MSI GD65 Z87 Mobo

I5 4670k CPU

R9 280x 3gb card

8GB Ram

700w Corsair GS Power Supply

an old HP 1907w 1440x900 60hz moniter via a vga cable

ANY Ideas or Suggestions on how to fix this problem would be much appreciated

BTW the graphics when its not crashing are spectacular

Very similar issue.

I also have a MSI R9 280x 3G Gaming. There are times when it seems completely stable, I can run Furmark on it with no issues at all. Then on the next reboot the driver will constantly crash, sometimes its hard even to get the desktop to show up. I have tried the 3.11beta9.5, The driver directly from MSI, and the prior stable 3.9 release. All seem to have the issue.

No idea where to go except deal with it until a stable driver is released. Any help would be great!

Edit: Running Windows 7 64bit

Just a wild guess, but you can contact MSI and ask if they know of these issues, have a beta BIOS if it happens to be a BIOS problem etc.

You should also try the cards in another computer. If they do it in every one of them, they might be faulty and should be RMA'ed.

(an old HP 1907w 1440x900 60hz moniter via a vga cable)are you kidding me. You are taking a $400.00 dollar card and plugging it into a VGA input on the monitor. Digital to analog doesn't work. Get yourself a DVI-D connector and this could help solve some of your issues.

I have exactly the same problem with the new driver. I have a asus r9 280x and a asus hd 7970 in CF and when i installed the new driver 13.12 i gives me blue screens on startup. Tried a clean install aswell. Also tried the beta driver, same problem. So im sticking with the old 13.9 onces for now.
