I keep getting a black screen instead of a login prompt.
Usng Catalyst 13.12 from AMD. As there is no login screen and I can't se anything, I have to shutdown using the power button.
When it re-boots. I can run either in either 'Safe-mode' or 'last known settings'. Both of those work and I can see the login screen, but I get that annoying really slow generic drivers. I can't open Catalyst drivers.
I don't know how to fix it.
The graphics card I bought is a MSI Radeon R7 260. MSI did not supply any Windows XP drivers (or Vista for that matter) on their CD. MSI have no drivers on their nothing on their web site.
They did have drivers for the Radeon R7 260X, so I installed that just incase, there is a commonality between the R7 260 and R7 260X. But that did not help me either.
I bought this graphics card specifically to support a 4k (UHD) monitor.
I did have a XFX Radeon R7 240 working in my system. I had to return it as the VGA port was flickering but HDMI at 3840 x 2160 was beautiful. I went for the R7 260 as a replacement, but I am annoyed it is not working.
Please help!!

The 260 and 260X are not the same card. You spent how much on a 4K monitor yet you can't use Windows 7 or 8.1? Windows XP dies in less than 30 days, time to move on. There will be nothing new for that OS.

That is a fair point. The 39" SEIKI 4k TV is on Amazon and is good value!. I get the equivalent of 4 x HD monitors, for the price of 2 x HD monitors.

My budget was limited. I was torn between a new PC and the lovely SEIKI 4k tv (monitor).

There are 450 million PC still running Window XP worldwide. I am optimistic Microsoft will change their mind. I don't think Microsoft will want people on en-mass to buy tablets, which will only help Google or Apple.

Wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which fills up first. XP support will be dropped April 8th. Even if Microsoft were for some stupid reason to extend XP support, do you think companies would waste time and resources developing drivers and software for it?

"do you think companies would waste time and resources developing drivers and software for it? "

No XP Support = No sale. I am returning my expensive Radeon R7 260 graphics card!

As for new software. Microsoft is saying"cloud computing" is the future. They are saying they want people to use web based apps such as Office 365. So it does matter what OS I am running?????

Even Google is pushing people to Chrome OS / Chromebook route. So I have access to all new apps via the web. The apps on Chrome are a breath of fresh air, finally some innovation!

Will wait and see. I might get an older Windows 7 on eBay. Nothing coming up!

I am not a gamer.

---------------------------------------------

As for my problem :-

I just discovered that my new cheap MSI Radeon HD 5450 supports 3840 x 2160!! (even though the spec says it can't). Ever so slightly slower then R7 240. Works great. The display/colour looks nicer under then under Radeon R7 240 card. I am not sure why?

Hi that is fine for now but before your new older card is broken there wont be any XP drivers for it either. So here is the thing there are new things released every month for pc's it seems you like TV more than a good running pc that is fine but put up with it you made the choice. As for us and AMD I dont think they care what card you use I know Nivida does not care if you want to use a ATI card. So if you are happy with the older under performing card that is all that count's, and by the way if you run things past the listed specs dont expect it to last very long it will break and you will be stuck trying to find a old card again. I personally think you made the right choice as XP does not know what to do with new video cards.Be Happy

Microsoft blows. The answer to your question is that AMD LLC does make a fortune from the sale and support of their video cards. 100's of millions of $$dollars$$. Does AMD blow too? Does AMD only report to multi-million dollar franchises and NOT the customers who buy the products they sell?

I think probably AMD blows.
