For a long time I'm experiencing rather annoying problem that is most likely caused by AMD Catalyst display driver and AMD HDMI audio driver. It affects Windows 7 x64 SP1 Restart/Shut down cycle and SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe card AFTER I wake up Display from sleep mode.

HW details: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R with latest bios, Intel C2Q9550, 8 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2, Sapphire R9 270X with latest bios, 625W Enermax MODU 82+ PSU.

If I set Windows 7 x64 to turn off the display after x minutes of inactivity (Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Power Options \ Turn off the display) system Restart/Shut down times are prolonged and the Creative Audio Control Panel application becomes extremely unresponsive.

I've been in contact with Creative Tech support for over a month. They've recently released a new version of SB X-Fi Titanium driver (XFTI_PCDRV_L11_2_40_0008.exe), but the problem remains the same.

If there's no AMD Catalyst in the system, Creative software for SB X-Fi Titanium isn't affected. Furthermore, Windows 7 Restart/Shut down cycle isn't affected as well. To confirm this, I did the following:

1. After I completely uninstalled AMD Catalyst 13.12 Creative Audio Control Panel (CACP) was no more affected by Display sleep mode bug. After I woke up Display from sleep mode, CACP loaded almost instantly!

2. I then installed latest AMD Catalyst 14.3 beta 1.0 (AMD display driver only). After I woke up Display from sleep mode Creative Audio Control Panel (CACP) needed 15 seconds to open. If I then clicked on Select Device button (within CACP), CACP froze for 30 seconds.

3. I completely uninstalled AMD Catalyst 14.3 beta 1.0.

4. I then installed AMD Catalyst 14.3 beta 1.0 (AMD display driver + AMD HDMI audio driver only, no CCC, no other stuff). After I woke up Display from sleep mode Creative Audio Control Panel (CACP) needed 55 seconds to open. If I then clicked on Select Device button, CACP froze for 100 seconds!

Summary: AMD Catalyst display and AMD HDMI audio drivers not only severely affect Creative SB X-Fi Titanium when Display is turned off by the system (graphics card), but also affect System Restart and Shut down cycle. Windows 7 x64 SP1 normally restarts within 15 seconds. If display is turned off at least once, computer needs 45 seconds to restart or shut down!

It's really strange that the problem presents itself AFTER display (Sapphire R9 270X) is woken up from sleep mode. Prior to that SB X-Fi Titanium (Creative Audio Control Panel) responds normally.

I can duplicate the issue on Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L, Intel Xeon X3370 (=C2Q9650), 8 GB Corsair DDR2 Dominator, Sapphire HD7870, 500W Enermax MODU 87+ PSU.

I've tried AMD Catalyst 13.4, 13.9, 13.11 beta, 13.12, 14.1-14.3 beta. Display sleep mode problem is present in every single version.

Any suggestion how to resolve this annoying issue? Thanks.

By the way: There's no such problem with Display sleep mode on Windows XP SP3.

Open device manager, expand sound devices, right click on the amd hdmi audio device and select disable. Try your creative stuff again (maybe after a reboot).

Well, that did the trick. After I disabled AMD High Definition Audio Device, Display sleep mode no longer affects the system Restart/Shut down cycle nor does it affect Creative Audio Control Panel which opens instantly every time.

So, may I expect AMD will fix HD Audio driver any time soon?

Well, ask them maybe. There's a contact link in the lower left corner.
