I have searched and searched but no solutions have worked. I have installed a fresh version of windows 8.1 and it starts off with the crappy graphics. So here's what I have tried:

1) Install 14.6 and 14.4 drivers. Right when it's installing drivers, the resolution turns amazing and the whole computer freezes. Then when I restart, blank screen after windows logo with no input possible and no mouse.

2) Boot to safe mode. Do the AMD driver install at C:\AMD\.. and then go to device manager, manually install display drivers and success! Drivers install, device shows up as HD6800. And then restart, then blank screen with nothingness.

3) Do the same as 2) but after manual install, disable HD6800. Computer starts up with crappy resolution from Microsoft adaptor. Then install catalyst drivers and computer freezes and blank screen on restart.

What the heck should I do? Been at this for hours! I've done countless windows 8.1 installs already!

There is a guide in the FAQ for installing new drivers.

Well I followed it.

Fresh windows 8.1 install. It had 28 important updates and 1 optional. 1 of the important updates was the AMD driver for 6800. I kept it checked. Then a couple of minutes into the update, the resolution changed to being amazing and everything froze just like before.

Would you like me to deselect the AMD update and install the others first, disable antivirus and then download the 14.6 drivers and install?

Yes...as a rule of thumb, never accept updates from Windows update or Steam that deal with AMD graphics. You can uninstall just that update...or, you can use system restore and do it all over again. Download the drivers to your desktop first. Whichever step you take above...have the computer updated. Reboot. Then follow the installation guide.

Edit: You said "It had 28 important updates and 1 optional"..well, the record I've seen so far is 86...but that's from the ones that reported back...It really is a important thing to keep up with

Hmm well I re-installed windows 8.1. Unchecked that update. Halfway through it gave me some error installing updates. I clicked "view details" and it showed me a code, then teh resolution changed to awesome and it froze. Everything unresponsive.

Reinstalling windows 8.1 yet again. I'll look for other updates on that list dealing with graphics. I'll get a screenshot and post it here. Anything comes to your mind? This is a fresh 8.1 install with no updates installed.

Should I try installing updates in safe mode?

No...install them regularly. Tell me what your processor, graphics card, and anti virus program is. And...there are some important WDM updates available and you sure want them...just nothing AMD.

Edit: Then use the clean install guide.

Close the internet connection first.

Clean install windows (not on top on the same partition), and do not search or install any windows updates.

Install a previously downloaded catalyst software.

Select custom install.

Select display driver, hdmi driver and CCC only.

When finished, reboot.

I don't know why you would want to install a older version. If you install the 14.4 correctly. Start over and use the 'clean' install method outlined in the link I gave you.

I redownloaded the ISO and made a new USB boot drive. Did the same things as before and apparently itnworked. I'm guessing that USB boot drive had files for windows update corrupted or something...
