Hey all,

I've been having a long-running issue with my 290x. Basically, under *any* mantle driver (anything 14.x), when I first boot and reach the desktop, within 3-5 seconds my screen will go black and my pc hard locks.

Upon restart, I get a POST message stating "Overclock failed".

Reverting to pre-mantle drivers (13.12 or Asus'  13.152 driver) fixes this issue entirely, but of course, leaves me with any number of performance problems in newer games (hi there watch_dogs).

To ensure that this is not a simple overclocking issue, I've run my cpu/memory at stock settings, I've run memtests and so on to ensure no problems there. Every time it comes down to running a 14.x driver that this occurs, regardless of my other settings. The first time this occured was on a clean install after a format in early february. I've made sure to properly uninstall a driver each time I've changed it.

Lastly - IF I can start a fullscreen application fast enough before the blackscreen occurs, I can run the pc for as long as I want without issue. It will only occur when first booting onto the desktop, never after, never in-game/app.

My full system specs:

Cpu: i7-4930k, tested @ stock / 5.1GHz

Memory: 32GB (4x8GB) Patriot Viper @ 2133MHz 10-11-10 timings

GPU: Asus r9 290x DirectCUII OC Edition, factory oc settings only.

Motherboard: Asus x79-Deluxe. bios 0802

Sound: Asus Xonar Essence STX

PSU: Coarsair hx1000w* (this PSU is rather old, its a carry over from my old 2x HD5970 CF folding rig - thought I should mention it)

SSD: Corsair ForceGT240gb

OS: Win7 x64 sp1, fully updated.

Any thoughts? I've been unable to test my card in another machine (people with tiny towers, ugh), so I can't discount the possibility of faulty hardware elsewhere. However, I can say that this issue *does not* occur using my older 7970. Only with the the 290x with a 14.x driver.

Edit: Left out my OS - derp.

ASUS says there is no 0802 BIOS for that board, only 0801 and 0901. Try 0901.

Nuts, my bad, had been fiddling with an old board recently to try that, getting all sorts of numbers mixed up.

I'm on 0801, I'll give the newer version a go and see what happens.

I've got an Asus R9 290 and had tons of problems on v14.4 and v14.7beta drivers.  But 13.12 works like a charm.

So for the time being, I'm just living with 13.12.
