Whilst gaming on my desktop, both monitors abruptly shutdown.  One screen went completely black while the other went blue with vertical white lines.  No text or error messeges on either screen.

I restarted computer to find that upon reaching the user login screen, my screen remained black with no cursor.

Restarting again in safe mode solves the problem of black screen on login.

While in safe mode I uninstalled all drivers associated with AMD and restarted to attempt logging in normally.  I can log in on normal mode with the AMD drivers uninstalled.

I reinstalled the drivers for 6870 diamond while in normal mode with no issues.  After installation I am prompted to restart and do so.  The black screen comes back upon reaching log in.

I completely wiped my harddrive and re-installed windows 7.  I then reinstalled the drivers and the problem was again reproduced.

specs:

Win 7 x32

intel i7 870 @2.93GHz

Gskill trichannel memory, 6 gb (yes I should be using x64 OS)

GA-P55A-UD3 Gigabyte motherboard

750W PSU

AMD Diamond Radeon 6870 gpu

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is your card new and is this your first experience with it, or has it just started to do this out of the blue?

The card is about 1.5-2 years old.  My friend passed it on to me when he upgraded.  No prior problems with it.  I installed it about 2 months ago without any issues.  This happened completely out of the blue.

I'm currently using my old 5770 card without any problems.  The problem is without a doubt isolated to the 6870 driver installation.

You should probably try the card in another computer. If it does the same thing, it means it probably died. (If it's still under warranty, RMA it.)

Note that even though it looks like it, it is not necessarily a driver issue. When you have no drivers installed (or you're in safe mode), the card doesn't make any image processing, it's virtually turned off and only passing through data produced by the CPU.
