Q.

What happened to Windows desktop gadgets?

A.

Microsoft took down its online Gadget gallery this summer and issued a safety warning to Windows Vista and Windows 7 users about using the desktop miniprograms on their computers. Researchers found security flaws, and that certain gadgets from “untrusted sources” (like malicious hackers) could leave the computer vulnerable to infiltration or takeover from an intruder.

In response to the threat, Microsoft recommends applying a security update and disabling desktop Gadgets and the Windows Sidebar. The company has an advisory on its site that explains the issue, the Windows versions involved — and provides links to a Microsoft Fixit Solution script that automatically disables the Windows Sidebar and Gadgets feature.

This "news" is 2 months old almost to the day LOL. Seems a bit of a cynical plot to make people migrate to developing Metro apps for Win8 etc. Afterall, Vista and W7's sidebar gadgets were hailed as the most amazing thing ever by MS .. and now that Win8 is here, all of a sudden they're full of vunerabilities and bad ?

Knew something was afoot when they took the gadgets page offline ages ago, leaving it with a handful of really bad ones as they're "best picks". There are sites out there which do still have loads of gadgets available for download but be careful, a lot have rebundled them to include ads in the installers ( thoosje.com are a prime example of this - avoid ).

Bit of a shame really as I've just found several nice ones which would have been handy to have used from the start of my W7 experience.

What I now use are :

CT Control 3.1 ( puttee.de ) - nice gadget with clock, alarm, countdown time, restart/shutdown/hibernate/lock workstation/log off, uptime, shutdown timer etc.

Pro Weather 2.0.1 - lost the download site but you can find it via google. Amazing weather gadget, loads of options and can manage 2 locations.

Network Meter ( addgadgets.com ) - very handy meter for network usage etc. Best I've found for network usage monitoring.

Volume Control Reloaded ( http://blog.orbmu2k.de/ ) - nice volume control gadget.

.. plus the sidebar from Open Hardware Monitor - ( http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ ).

Also running RocketDock .. who needs a taskbar .. heheh .

The only sidebar gadget I use is the AIDA system monitor. Gadgets are like the Windows Vista Ultimate Extras, yea it may be kinda nice to have, but there are other ways to get the same things. The problem with it being a native thing in Windows is that there a lot of Joe Noob and Jane Nooblet out there that just click Yes to everything and don't do a simple check as to where the things they want to use come from (which is how scammers make tons of money off Facebook apps, same thing). Anyway, this is what mine looks like:

That's my sidebar stuff along with a CPU-z shot. The biggest gadget is the Open Hardware Monitor gadget. I've tweaked the clock/network ones to not show options which I'm not concerned about. The weather gadget isn't that big, it's the fly-out page ..  Works for me

PM me an email addy and I'll zip it up and send it to you. I can't remember the original website I got it from and it appeared in a pack of 1000 Windows Vista/7 Sidebar gadgets I was checking out off some site or other. So I grabbed it again . The others you can find from the links in my post above .

A weather gadget in the UK...Isn't that about as useless as a weather gadget in, say, Seattle? Most of the time it's rain isn't it?

'bout the same here. If a newcomer says he doesn't like the weather, we tell him to just 'wait a minute'.
