Who here is dumping ATI for NVIDIA because of ATI'spitifulll Linux support? NVIDI's latest driver released just in time for steam beta for Linux increases NVIDIA's driver performance on Linux by 200%. Where as ATI could care less of Linux.

I've never really understood fanboys, but it's interesting how some seem to be more rabid than others.

Even with Valve apparently being committed to games for Linux... there's a long way to go before it ever becomes important enough to make a difference for either nvidia or AMD.

On the other side my friens, you have it all wrong. NVIDIA specifically worked with valve/steam specifically to time the new NVIDIA driver with the beta release of steam for Linux. So, contrary to your statement your wrong. As NVIDIA believes Linux is important to their image.

The latest NVidia GeForce driver, released yesterday, gives Linux users ‘double the performance’ and ‘dramatically reduces game loading times’, according to the company’s press release.

Having been in development for almost a year, the GeForce R310 driver has been designed to ‘showcase the enormous potential of the world’s biggest open-source operating system’.

NVIDIA collaborated with Valve and other games developers in designing the driver, having been ‘thoroughly tested’ with the Steam for Linux beta.

“With this release, NVIDIA has managed to increase the overall gaming performance under Linux,” Valve’s head of marketing is quoted as saying.

“NVIDIA took an unquestioned leadership position developing R310 drivers with us and other studios to provide an absolutely unequalled solution for Linux gamers.”

Canonical’s VP of Sales and Business Development, Chris Kenyon, shared some interesting stats on Ubuntu’s uptake in the world in a presentation to attendees of the recent Ubuntu Developer Summit.

In a 30 mins long talk he revealed:

• In 2 years Ubuntu has been pre-installed on $7.5 billion worth of hardware;
• Canonical are working with leading ODMs in Taiwan;
• Ubuntu will account for roughly 9% of all global PC shipments by 2014.

Of this latter stat he adds: ‘This will be an extraordinary accomplishment’.

So Ubuntu’s shipping on a lot of PCs – but where are they?

ASUS have been dutifully selling Ubuntu netbooks in Europe for the last few years, announcing the addition of another 2 models to their line-up recently.

But most are being sold in emerging markets such as China. It’s there that Ubuntu has a presence in 400 Dell retail stores – putting ’the open-desktop [in] pride of place’ says Kenyon.

Linux people go Here so they can build their kernels out of Mur and Lunar Rays by themselves, and complain about new Ubuntu UI's.

I seem to remember recently seeing Linus Torvalds blatantly looking at a camera sticking up his middle finger and telling NVidia what to do with it (aka FU) because NVidia was being a PITA working with them, or not working with them is more like it.  That may have something to do with NVidia having a change of heart and getting on the bandwagon.....just sayin.

Yeah I remember that also.  Linus has never been one to mince words... heh.

If this were HPC we were talking about... things might be different.  Making deals like Titan happen are probably the main reason behind any serious involvement in developing linux drivers from Nvidia(or AMD, for that matter).  They're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts just to make whatever tiny precentage of gamers who use linux happy.
