Is something to think about. Are you ever so happy with your rig that you can browse a tech site and not see anything you want?

I know I am until AMD releases Piledriver, since it should bring a new PCIe 3.0 capable chipset and quite possibly DDR4 since I've seen quite a few reports that Trinity's successor APU will feature a DDR4/3 controller.

It'll be odd if I have to get a new card, I have the Creative Gigaworks S750 sound system which has to be hooked up weird to my Creative X-Fi Titanium because it's not optical...

For me, once my new Sapphire 7950  and NZXT Switch 810 case arrives, will be quite nice... For now...

Maybe as QB said about a newer soundcard, but not that I needed "as an urgent matter", but would be nice... Or maybe a bigger SSD for games.. Just "maybes"..

The one thing I "reaaaally" need is a better CPU cooling, since my ambient temps are so hot (the caribbean) that I can't get the most out of my CPU without highest temps.. But at 4,6 is enough so far...

Until next december (time for a little update, again), very happy so far..

Best regards...

not really, there is always something going to be coming out soon.

like amd making pcie3 video cards at the end of the year and it does not look like they have any motherboards with that yet. the other brand does.

oh and i seem to miss out , no one makes or sells a 6970 card anymore. i know a 6990 is really the way to go for cross fire but who wants to spend that much when the 8970s are due out soon.

i don't hate my rig.

 i may have deeper issues.

With new things coming out every year i will never be happy with my rig.

I always "Oohhh... i want that shiny more powerful new things on my pc." even though with my current rig now i can still play most game with playable framerates.

Yea, I just bought me a Canon VIXIA HF M500 digital camcorder and a PNY 64GB SDXC card which set me back about $360 as a birthday present to myself. I also want to get a backlit mechanical keyboard, but I already have a DAS Keyboard Professional which has worked flawlessly for...Years, I can't remember when I did get it actually...Not so much for typing, but my keyboard is partially shaded by the desk from the (nice and bright) monitor light so when I play games at night it's not to illuminated. One day I also need to get me a good quality photo printer, my Brother HL-4040CN color laser printer ($299.99 on Newegg a couple of years ago, great deal) isn't the greatest when it comes to full page pictures (roller marks). I could also use a new laptop, but a 1920x1080 AMD Trinity based laptop but they are quite hard to come by.

That's always a very fluctuating emotion with me.Up until just recently, I thought I was happy ... mostly.  But I realized I was no longer content with the case that I had.  So just last week I replaced it with a Cooler Master HAF XM with a new motherboard and FX-8350.  Aside from more and faster RAM and a new Sound Blaster Z, I kept the other parts I already had.I'm pretty satisfied as a result and imagine I will be for quite a while.I don't even necessarily have any urge to go up to a 7970 from my 7950 video card.  It might be a little more powerful, but my games run great.

Yes, happy with my rig as it's doing all its jobs nicely. AMD has nothing better to offer anyway. No real innovation since years.

My next system I am likely going Intel if AMD keeps being a slack arse in terms of technology.

Not really.  It seems that there is always something new that comes out that would be fun to have but as costs go up for the new tech my wallet can't seem to keep up with it...LOL.  I would love some new graphics cards in my main rig right now and a 8350 in my secondary, but like I said....the funds are extremely lacking...LOL

Let's hope they never figure out how to chip hardware to lock itself to the motherboard it is installed to like software is getting these days. Could you imagine not being able to eBay your old hardware?

They already know how to do that.  It's just a check against PCI and device IDs in the bios during the boot process.  In college I hacked my laptop to circumvent a check like that since I wanted to swap out the wifi card and put linux on it.  It didn't want me to do that, but I convinced it otherwise.

I guess I'd have to be in the "not really" category also.  Hardware-wise I often go for a few years inbetween upgrades, but I always have ideas on mods and other geeky activities I could be doing.  Some of them I'm able to resist, others... not so much.

Yeah that's sort of where I am now also.  After a while current projects reach a point of no return where I(mostly) stop buying stuff and just work with what I have... but there's always the next project after that...

I remember thinking when PCI Express and SATA came out that one day I would get me server board, slap in 4 Opterons with 64GB of memory, a dual GPU video card, and have the most powerful home computer in the county! Except when I thought this, AMD was still using Socket 939 and chips like the Opteron 165 were pretty darn cheap (and the bulk of games weren't crappy console ports and could take advantage of a CPU's power). Although a quartet of Opteron 4340 Seoul 3.5GHz Socket C32 would only be about $1500...which factoring in the cost of the motherboard isn't actually that much more expensive than an Intel Extreme Edition i7...and you would have 24 cores...If I ever had the money to burn, I'd have to put a system together and see how it would work out. If it didn't turn out as expected I'm sure a local school would kill to have a system like that for their main network server.

Actually I just did a quick price out on Newegg:

Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-H8DCL-6F-O Dual Socket C32 - $359.99
CPU: AMD Opteron 4340 Seoul 3.5GHz Socket C32 95W Six-Core Processor (x2) -$779.98
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) CL7 (x2) - $149.99

Subtotal $1,439.95

Figure...$2000 after power supplies, coolers, case, etc... then however much you want to spend on a graphics card, since it only has a PCIe 2.0 x8 slot then I would look at the HD 7970, so under $2500 you get a dual socket 12 core 32GB RAM setup. So, it's that, or a Macbook.

Can't see my self ever spending over 2 grand on a pc in one shot even if I had the money. there's better thing to waste it on like strippers and beer..

But that would be one bad a$$ system

Back to the topic

I'm never really happy with my rig I always want to upgrade somthing or add somthing. right now I've got long list of stuff I want to upgrade on my rig.

Spend enough on strippers and beer and it will make you happy about everything, at least for a while.

Or so I imagine...

but yeah... there's hardly even a reason to spend that much on a PC these days.  Half that will get you a PC which you'll have trouble slowing down... the rest is just bells and whistles and shiney things.
