I have an AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ CPU that has recently developed an overheating issue.  Because of this, the CPU gets too hot after about 5-10 minutes and the PC powers off.

While I wait for a replacement heatsink I installed the AMD overdrive, figuring I could lower the CPU clock speed to lower the heat generated by the CPU.  All I did was lower the slider a bit on the screen that shows all of the cores (all eight of them).

My son when into a game called Dungeon Defenders and it was like he was speedhacking.  His character was running around the speed super fast.  I found this odd when all I did was lower the clock speeds...

Any ideas why it would be doig this?

You should get an aftermarket cooler, doesn't even have to be expensive (something like Coolermaster Hyper 212) and use the best possible TIM (Arctic Silver 4 or 5) and you should never run into overheating issues, even when you are not overclocking. And over/down -clocking should be done from BIOS. As for the speedy game, haven't got a clue game bug?
