Upgrading PC and have been advised by a PC shop that this combination is more than adequete to play all games on ultra with my 7950 but I am wondering how far it could be overclocked in the interests of getting the most life out of the machine as possible (the only purpose of the machine being gaming).
Well let's see. The computer shop is a dumbass if they think a FX 6300 and a 7950 will not have problems on Ultra settings in every game, you need a 5ghz i7 and a couple of thousand dollars worth of video hardware to even come close to guaranteeing that. "ASROCK Pro 3" brings up several boards, I am assuming you have the AsRock 970 Pro 3. That is a budget board which lacks the overclocking components and features found on enthusiast boards such as the 990FX based boards. I wouldn't expect to much more than 4.1ghz.
I know a guy who has his FX-6300 OC'd to 4.8Ghz on air, so I'm fairly certain these chips are good enough for whatever gaming you throw at them. I don't think an i7 is needed for any game unless you're doing some triple-monitor nonsense.
