Hi guys, listen, I recently purchased a XFX HD 5870 and the problem I'm experiencing is very unusual. Artifacts like little black lines and squares show up when I activate Aero in win7, red squares and white lines show up when playing about every vid and game intros also experience the same problem. Also, Counter-Strike 1.6, that uses OpenGL, has this problem as well. On the other hand, games themselves like Batman AA, Bioshock2, GTA IV, MW, MW2, Mass Effect 2 are running fine and with no artifacts. Maybe only OpenGL-based apps are having this problem? I'm not sure. I don't know if its a software thing because I tried like 4 different drivers (9.10, 9.11, 9.12, 10.1) and the problem remains. Also tried a different PCI-E slot but that didn't help also. Is my card defective? I don't know if I need to RMA it. Help!

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with XFX HD 5870. Black lines and squares with Aero in Win7. Squares (not red though) in videos and game intros. Flickering white squares and the occasional flickering polygon in certain games: Oblivion, Monkey Island Special Edition. However, Colin McRae Dirt 2 works perfect with settings at max and so does Unigine Heaven Benchmark. Have you come to any conclusion?

It's Catalyst problem, I have Artifacts in GRID, DIRT2 AND NBA2K10! With cat 9.11...10.2. Catalyst 9.10 work OK with all games, but have bug to transfer my videos for my TV LCD HDMI.

But me and skinnyq mostly have artifacts in OpenGL games. For example, I just tried Quake 4 and had small flickering black squares all over the screen. However, I played Lord of the Rings Online Trial and Dirt 2 earlier today and had no artifacts. (Catalyst 10.2) I'll try the Grid demo next. Me and skinnyq also tried 9.10 drivers with no success so I don't think you're having the same problem as we do.

Hi Zestwan,

It is good to know I'm not alone in this mess.

Well, my problems were fixed by increasing the 2d clocks but I don't like this solution, at all. Cat 10.4 might fix it since it will address all 2d issues to my knowledge, altough I am hoping for a bios update to come sooner.

My specs are:

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P

i7 920

Corsair XMS3 6GB 1600mhz

XFX HD5870.

me and "fun" with Bad Company 2. When the game is not going all black (audio is fine) it's getting jiggy with it. No overclocking, no heat. RMA'd a 5850 that was doing the same thing.

tried 9.12, 10.2 and 10.3a (current) all stock. always use driver sweeper in safe mode after uninstalling. ai on and off. always default. running 1920x1080. it almost ALWAYS happens after a big in-game event, like an explosion or abrupt screen change.

my screen also goes black in bad co2. like "poof!" and i see a sliver of a bar running on the left side of the lcd, maybe 4 pixels wide, almost like the game has been alt_tabbed and hung up or something weird. Audio is fine. Happening to a LOT of folks from what I've been reading.

I have a thought. Can weird network traffic cause artifacting like this? Just a thought.

Temps are 50-70 and cpu is running maybe 40. Win7 all updated. I even ditched AV so it couldn't be an issue at all during testing.

When I force DX9 in the ini I get all sorts of ground flicker. The last Asus 5850 i RMA'd wasn't any better. Same black screens and green/pink/purple artifacting.

Bad system RAM maybe??? Ran memtest a good while with no errors but maybe its missing something?

Im about to go buy an xbox 360... .... .... nah.

I'm getting identical problems to those experienced by skinnyq and Zestwan with my XFX 5870.  Black lines and blur glitches on the taskbar and other places in Win7, and persistent texture glitches in World of Warcraft.  Dragon Age, by contrast, runs fine.  Temps are 45-62C and card I've tried card at both stock speeds and underclocked.  Problems persist with both 10.2 and 10.3 beta.  Maybe I will try increasing the 2D clocks like Mr. Skinnyq.

My specs are

ASUS P5N-D mobo

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

4GB Mushkin DDR2 800

Corsair 750TX power supply

Are you all with XFX cards?

Didn't see any of these problems with any of the 10.x drivers

After some investigation, it seems that my artifacts don't appear in screen caps, which indicates that the problem is not with the card.  I've tried a new DVI cable but that had no effect?

Maybe it's my monitor?  That seems strange though, given that my 8800GTS did not generate similar problems.

tb206:

My Win 7 Aero desktop artifacts do not appear in screenshots. However, artifacts do appear in screenshots from Oblivion and Monkey Island Special Edition.

I have been through the support procedure and I was told to RMA the card.

RMA'ing my 5870 with Newegg. Just finished printing my UPS label. That's one 5850 and one 5870 down. Thought about a 5770 next, for giggles. There is something seriously wrong with these chipsets. More (lots more) will be failing in the coming months. Mark my words.

edit: *fixed*?

weeks later. i have rma'd or lost money on every component in this machine..

2 mobos (msigd70 and gigabyte880gm-udh2)
3 vid cards (msi5850, asus5870, sapphire5850)
2 psu's (tx750 and hx650)
2 sets of ram (xm3 and ocz plat)
5 fresh installs of win7 64bit
2 dvi cables
2 new surge protectors
2 mice (deathadder and G5 rev2)
3 keyboards (G11, eclipse2 and arctosa)
3 cases of yeungling

no matter what combo of parts i used, even with diff mobos, i was artifacting like the above pics or my screen was going black after 10 seconds of hopping into BC2. i though, "must be the cpu since it's the only thing left to swap."

but then i changed my ram settings from "unganged" to "ganged."

and my world changed...

yesterday was the first day i was able to play. and i played for about 8 hours straight. without a hitch. so much my back hurts. but the birds are chirping today and the flowers smell that much sweeter.

i cried tears of joy. not really, but you can imagine how i felt.

if "ganged" mode does not continue to solve my problem i will report back. until then i will be on the battlefield...

im having this exact problem. i posted in another section that was similar to this but this is the real problem. I know its not anything else in my system because i just upgraded from a 4890 to a 5870 and everything was working fine with the 4890. i'm probably going to have to switch back and rma the card through newegg.

does anyone have a workable solution?

Hi guys.

whats happening to you guys sounds similar to my issue, but not really the same, ive been playing modern warfare 3. and been alright yesturday, and most of today, but all of a sudden after the  mission where you get to use that remote control gun on tracks and blow everyone away, then you run to catch up with everyone and fall down that incline. not that it matters where i was in the game, as the mission ended and you fall into the water and crawl out of the water i started to see squares. not really in any 1 place but all over, and they move around, there kind of white but you can see theres an image in the squares. not a solid colour. i shut the game down an tried a different part of the game i had played already. and there was the squares again.

in menus it is fine, and videos seem fine. only time i get it is in game.

i cant see it being a driver issue cause everything was alright yesturday and earlier today.

has my card had it. ?

would it help to repaste the heatsink on my gpu.

just paid 200pound for my hd5870. not happy. it is the ax5870 with the big heatsink and fan. its been working great up to today. had it for about 3 months or 4. not sure exactly but i dont have garentee. bought from shop called c.e.x. sold as seen.

Who knows, you've provided exactly jack diddly squat info about your system, apart from the VGA card model .. really helpful that, in a tech help needed thread in a tech help forum ..!!!

Maybe, who knows .. you could try it and see IF it doesn't affect any warranties etc ..

You "just" bought it, or it's 3 - 4 months old ..? ALL things have a guarantee / warranty, there is no such thing as "sold as seen" as that contravenes the Trading Standard's S4les of Goods Act .. It's a criminal offence to state that on ANY article for s4le, so if the retailer gives you grief over it, tell them that and you're taking them to court, they'll soon STFU and back down for a refund or replacement ..

BUT, DO NOT mess with the card at all if you want to go that way, as they can counter claim that you damaged it yourself, thus leaving you with nothing but a faulty card and a hundred quid or so poorer .. same as messing with "reflowing the solder", which should only really ever be done in a factory with the right equipment by the manufacturer, not the stupid "stick it in the oven" crap people fall for ..

Here's a list of what we'd need to know about things to start any troubleshooting advice too :

Pre-Built PC Brand / Model if rig is a DELL/COMPAQ/ACER etc :

Or .. :

Motherboard:
CPU ( Brand / Model / Is the computer Overclocked, if so list CPU speeds, FSB, Memory speeds, Voltages etc. etc.):
RAM ( Brand / Model / Tell us the number of sticks and if you´re using different brands):
Video Card ( Brand / Model / Is it overclocked, and if so, to what speeds and using what utility ):
PSU ( IMPORTANT !!! Brand & Model / Link to webpage with specs / manufacturer's website or picture of unit label ):
Monitor ( Brand / Model / Connection used):
Hard drives:
Optical Drives:
Additional PCI cards:
Number of fans present:

Operating System :
Video Card Drivers in Use ( and tried ):
Motherboard Drivers Used:
Apps/Games causing issues ( and if they've been patched ):
All major components check 100% after thorough testing ( eg. Memory & Memtest86 ):
System clean of viruses / spyware etc:
Other things tried:

.. maybe with that info, someone could hep you out more.
