Does the chip become degraded when OC'd because of the *voltage* applied or the resultant *heat*?  From stock 3.7Ghz am OC'd at 4.444 @ 1.50v (BIOS) but my temps are low-to-mid-thirties while gaming because of my cooling.  See:  "Corsair H100 Install in 600T case".

To get to 4.5 necessitates 1.5+ volts with other BIOS settings on AUTO.  Would the suggested settings by GG for a previous 955 query be similar for a 980?  Just use the AMD Dragon PDF sliders approach to the AMD Overdrive utility? ...would just increasing the CPU voltage with everything else on AUTO from 1.5-1.55v  or even a bit higher be OK?

The degrading probably takes a few years when on a higher voltage. I think 1.5v should be safe for the phenom. I had Oc'ed my athlon x3 445 to 4.0ghz @1.6v and it was perfectly stable and temps were always below 57c (on load) , but later I put it on 1.3v @ 3.4 ghz.

AOD should be used as a test tool, main OC'ing should be done via BIOS.

All CPUs will degrade even under normal operation through electron migration and other things. If you keep the voltage under 1.5v and temps under 55*C or so you'll never know the difference. With the way technology is what's the difference if your CPU lasts 5 years of 15 years, you'll replace it before then anyway.

HEAT or VOLTAGE?

So far, stability was not increased with experimentation with different voltage settings and NB and HT frequency settings except a small increase in the HT ref clock and increasing CPU offset voltage. Best results on AUTO, but will keep at it...

Anyone notice any benefits from increasing PCIe frequency?

Alright, you don't know how to use Google...Heat causes electronic parts to degrade...actually heat causes everything to degrade, so the cooler you run the better. However, that is only part of the equation, as voltage also causes it to degrade. Voltage is a measure of force (force in this context is talking about the transistors and gates and whatnot), which is why extra voltages stabilize overclocks, but forcing things causes them to degrade. If you run a CPU at ideal temperatures and stock or even below stock voltages, eventually it will become unusable, but that time is long after it has become obsolete. If you overclock a CPU at above normal voltages but still within voltage limits, and temps which are higher than stock but still within thermal limits, then you are still talking about a life which exceeds the useable life of the product, as 10 years from now there will not be Socket AM3+, there will be (should be) 128 bit processors and operating systems, and your motherboard has a much higher chance of failure. Now, stop being anally retentive about how much your CPU life is shortened by overclocking.

As for the PCIe frequency, if you bothered to do any research on your own, which would amount to just a search for PCIe frequency on the search engine of your choice, you would see you don't ***** with that, 105 is used to artificially inflate benchmarks, but anything over 100 can cause very nasty things such as SATA drive corruption and undesired operations.

Very SIMPLE question...possible answer required:  Voltage.  Heat.  Heat & Voltage...didn't need a dissertation on electronics or one on why you are angry at the world!  For 7154 posts...you sure don't know how to talk to people, do you?  Step away from the keyboard.  That many posts...it is obvious!

Nice try for a response...however, you no longer have credibility...

He has more credibility than someone who won't listen to someone who's taken the time to explain the ins and outs to them .. I was going to post up a similar thing about electron migration etc, but seeing as you don't want to learn about it, and what it means for your electronic components, then why ask ?

You obviously DO need to read up on it, or stay misinformed / ignorant and fry your components before their time .. all it takes is a small amount of basic research on your part and reading up on it in your own time .. but hey, nobody can help those who don't want to be helped ..

Asked a SIMPLE question...have seen you denigrate other posters as well.  If you don't want to be helpful...don't be helpful and troll somewhere else , OK?  Don't need to hear your smart ass remarks.  You have NOT taught me anything I don't already know but...you LOVE to pontificate and are pompous as well!  Put your pants on and come up out of your Mom's basement.

I wasn't having a go at you, idiot, but seeing as you've taken it upon yourself to show your true colours ( why didn't I see this coming with a nick like that ) .. then I'll allow myself to have a go back at an obvious "holier than thou" troll who thinks he knows everything and can attack people for nothing, due to his inalienable rights as a moron.

ALL I was saying bud, if you bothered to read it correctly, was that you obviously DO need to read up on things, and listen to those who've taken the time to explain things to you about the questions YOU asked, that's all, nothing more, nothing less .. You're the NOOB with overclocking, YOU asked the questions, so why act like a total and utter belligerent cretin and idiot towards someone who took the time to explain things to you ?

... Oh, and take the "feeling sorry for yourself" thing and cram it, and as for the rest, I have no time for idiot people like you who always think that any comment made here is a personal attack, or that being from over there gives you lot some sort of automatic right to act in an abusive manner towards other people who they're getting FREE help from.

Your attitude beggars belief, honestly it does ..

Upon reading the responses...*USA* makes valid points and certainly makes no derogatory inferences towards YOUR country.  He just does not appear to appreciate your tone of communication.   If you don't agree with him...fine.  The fellow readers from the USA certainly deserve an apology for your uncivil comments regarding America.

The readers don't like anti-British or anti-Zionism, anti-American or any other ethnocentrism on posts regarding computer hardware...or any other forum for that matter!

I didn't see it as anti-american, go to a post office when the welfare checks come in or go to a grocery store when food stamps come in, or try and argue with a holier-than-thou Christian, or hell, the class system over in the UK

Why are you talking like you're "another" "*USA*" guy, when your details are the exact same as your first account ? Nice try, but FAIL ...

Observation based on years of experience from using the internet since green screens and bulletin boards mate, nothing's changed I see, and your attitude just backs my point up ..
My pointing it out is just me exercising my freedom of speech to be able to point it out, there's nothing "anti-any/thing/one/body" in it at all. You just felt aggreived because you saw it for the truth that it is.

Me, apologise for the lack of a decent upbringing, education, lessons in basic politeness, respect etc, that you and the disproportionately huge percentage of your compatriots who act in the same manner, show on forums where they get free help ( and elsewhere in real life too - see it first hand mate, was never impressed by it either ) ? Never in a million years mate .. ever .. or maybe when all of the Suns in the known Universe burn out, maybe.

Now, account number three to make more moot and inane comments / misinformed accusations etc, what's it gonna be : -   ~^USA^~ or maybe !&USA&! or even ***USA*** .. ? Faites vos jeux Messieurs, 'Dames .. Rien ne va plus !!
