I was looking forward to the Frame Pacing that is in 13.8 drivers but I have run into an issue with it and my crossfire configuration. If I load into any game I have no issues playing and it runs much smoother (or at least to my eye) then when I run on the 13.6 drivers. However as soon as I alt-tab to check something else, and then tab back into it my secondary card gets stuck at 100% usage. From then on, if I have any game open, the card reports 100% usage no matter what settings I have tried to change. Now this does not affect my gameplay at all, it still runs butter smooth, however I would rather not have one card running at ~25% while the other maxes for no reason.

Troubleshooting done so far:

Currently I have completly wiped my OS drive and reinstalled Windows 8. Fresh load, installed drivers and games, no luck. This issue does not happen in any earlier drivers.

My PC's Specs:

Intel i7 3770k @ 4.6 cooled with Swiftech H220

Gigabyte G1.Sniper3

16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series @ 2133

512 Samsung 840Pro (OS Drive)

256 Plextor M5M MSata (Linux Boot/Data Drive)

2x1TB Hitachi Deskstars Striped (Data Drive)

XFX Double-D 7970 FX-797A-TDFC

Diamond 7970 7970PE53G

Rosewill Lightning-1000 PSU

AZZA Genesis 9000 Case

Wndows 8 Pro 64bit

Any advice or insight would be much appreciated!

I have the same problem, but in my case crossfire performance is worse than if I disable, in games, I have always the second GPU to 100% and performance is worse than if I disable crossfire

Catalyst 13.8 Beta ( Grid 2: Crossfire enable 50 FPS, Crossfire disable 57 FPS, Metro LL: Crossfire enable 51,20 FPS, Crossfire disable 51,87 FPS ).

Catalyst 13.6 Beta ( Grid 2: Crossfire enable 60 (vsync enable), crossfire disable 58 FPS, Metro LL: Crossfire enable 57,85 fps, Crossfire disable 49 FPS)

In assassins's creed 3 and Saint's Row The Third, I have disabled Crossfire in the profile and the second GPU is always between 20 and 60% load

Firefox hardware acceleration is always the second GPU to 100%, I have to create a profile for firefox.exe and disable crossfire to fix

My System:

AMD phenom II x6 1090t @ 4ghz cooled with Thermalright True Black 120

Asus Crosshair IV Formula

12 GB ( 2X2GB OCZ3BE1600LV2G @ 2000Mhz; 2x4GB G.SKILL F3-12800CL8-4GBXM @ 2000Mhz ) 9-10-9-27

128 GB Crucial M4 SSD ( OS Drive )

500 GB WD black ( Game Drive )

1 TB WD GREEN + 2TB WD GREEN ( Data Drive )

Sapphire 7970 reference with accelero xtreme 3 7970 @ 1050/1500

Sapphire 7970 Vapor X

Be quiet BQT P7 PRO 1200W

Cosmos II case

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits

This did not happen with the Catalyst 13.6 beta, 13.5 beta or 13.4

If I remember correctly, I read that it was normal for one card to max out before the other. Crossfire first completely utilizes the primary card then uses the secondary when needed. This is why your not seeing any gaming problems.

No, that's not correct, the load is typically very balanced. I'm seeing the same problem, GPU 1 can be coasting along at 50% usage while GPUs 2 & 3 are maxed out. I tested this with a frame rate limit which would normally result in all three cards running in and around that 50% range. This is definitely a bug. I'll be submitting a bug report on this shortly, i suggest anyone else with the issue do the same.

Well I decided to run AMD overdrive in our driver and looked at the activity, Temperature and fans speed. Before I ran my game I noticed no activity in the lower tabed secondary card. I left it open, started the game and played for 3 mins then left the match by hitting the windows key. I looked at the secondary card that previously had no activity and it was at 95%. I then tabbed to the primary card and it was at 99%. The temperature on secondary card was 69c while the primary card was at 73c. The fans speeds were also close. The cards did exactly what I said. The primary ran full then the second card kicked in full throttle while playing. Try it and see if you see what I saw.

As a follow up, I have done some research and the problem lies with ULPS. There is a registry fix to disable ULPS, and after a restart the problem is fixed, and both cards run normally. However this is not an ideal fix as this eliminates the Zero Core Power state from all secondary cards in Crossfire meaning the cards will not power down when not in use, but it is the only thing I have found that solves the problem.

I know it's the last place most people look...but, try looking at "How to and FAQ" for something relevant. FAQ

Yes that's the solution, now is different, with catalyst 13.8 Metro: 60'56 fps and both card working together
