is it 7870 or 7850 you want to crossfire?

doesnt matter though, yes you can crossfire, but if your cpu is old or not powerful enough you wont get the best out of crossfire as of bottlenecking.

psu wise, you need a good one with at least 650 wattage.

hope it helped.

Thanks for your answer. The idea is with a 7850 becuse i guess will be easier to configure crossfire with same cards. My CPU is an old but strong core 2 Quad Q9450. The porblem is that I dont want to upgrade motherboard and CPU because im really happy with it. I use heave CAD an FEM software and I dont need more by now.

ASUS P5Q3.

Appears both slots will be 16 lanes, although phrase added:   "support ATI CrossFireX technology at x8 link..."

www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5Q3/#specifications

The cpu @2.66 with no Turboboost is problematic; almost 6 years old.

Thanks for answer UcouldBrong. I have read on the manual that have 2 16x slots, but can only work at 8x in crossfire. I have read few articules in which it say that there is not too much difernces in performance between both, but im realy afraid about my old CPU and motherboard can afford that crossfire with apropiate performance on dual x8.

if i were you i would not crossfire, would rather go for a more powerful single card.

i did the same thing 3 months ago with my amd phenom (5 years old) and the result was horrible performance to the point that using crossfire was slowing my pc down and it wasnt useful at all.

was forced to buy this new pc just for the sake of my 7870s.

Overclock the snott out of that core 2 quad and it'll be fine.

Definately Crossfire...it is worth it!  7850s are NOT that expensive, right now.  You can overclock them a bit in Catalyst, too.

On the 2 Quad Q9450:

Overclock, but don't get carried away with the multiplier factor too much and increase the voltage to 1.3-1.38v or so if you want to bring it up to3.0-3.2GHz or so. Recommend you incrementally increase your OC, first.  Even a small OC to 2.9GHz will increase performance.

MONITOR YOUR TEMPS!

Recommend you follow the "Windows 7 (8) Optimization Guide" (to the letter) to unburden and streamline your cpu operation...found on SSD Review.

If you are using an SSD...follow the SSD Optimization Guide, too.

Thanks for answering again. I talked with a friend 6 months ago, and i told him  my system specs, and he told me "Ei, why you have that CPU and motrheboard without oveclock? why did you spent so much money on it?" so...I have system overclocked since then at 3200 Mhz estable...

In that point, lets go!! crossfire, 7850+7850 or 7850+7870? I have read that if i buy a 7870 will go as fast as a 7850...

check your motherboard manuel to see if it supports crossfire. , and no a 7870 will not downclock to the 7850's speed. However the memory buffer will be the same. So be sure to get matching memory and overclock the 7850 to the highest stable clock you can get it to. Should be north 1000mhz if you have voltage control.
