What does the performance look like for 3 290Xs? Anyone has such system so far? What about the optimization for games in 3 way?

The only person I've seen post so far with three 290X cards is having thermal issues due to spacing (i.e. not having any).

Most games will get at least some benefit from three GPU's, but several things need to be true to even think about justifying three 290X cards:

1)  You have a very fast CPU.

2)  You play at very high resolution.  Nothing less than a 30" single monitor, but triple-monitor Eyefinity would be appropriate.

3)  Your motherboard does no less than 16x/8x/8x with three cards, and it should be PCIe 3.0.  All CF is done over the PCIe bus, so you don't want to create a bottleneck there.

well, I am going to buy Asus X79 deluxe and I already have 3960x and 16gb 2400mhz. So, I want to know the performance of 3-way CF.

I wouldn't even touch a 290X until the board partners release their custom cooled versions. As far as the benefit goes, I would not expect to see an additional $580 worth of improvement, not unless you are using three 2560x1600 displays.

Well, you said thermal issue. So, what if I turn my fan speed to 65%, will there be any thermal issue? Or I can have a 200mm case fan attached to the side window of my PC case. Is this ok?

well, you are probably right but I am a crazy fan of reference cards. I never bought any video cards which are not in reference designs.

AMD's reference cooler is inadequate and if you turn the fan speeds up to 65% then you better have some good speakers rated for at least 100w RMS if you want to hear them over the wail. Wait for custom cooled cards.

The thermal issues in question were due to having two cards right next to each other, so one had no airflow.

I don't find triple 290X an outrageous idea at all, with enough screen real estate, but I wouldn't even consider it on air.

Hi, I tried with a 3-way R9 290X but I have only problems. If you want to run that without liquid cooling, you will be better with only 2-way. I tried all possible configurations and if you see my other post, you will see that you will have issues with only air cooling. I will try with liquid cooling and see the difference, I hope that will work.
