I'm thinking about buying a new pc for my brother as a present and thansk for all he has done to help me lately and he loves AMD processors, I like Radeon GPUs myself. But I don't know what the APU is and have no idea if I should buy it over a amd cpu for him.I have tried looking up some details but the impression I get is it it's basically just another CPU design which I'm sure it can probably do more than that.Could someone explain to me exatly what the APU is for and how it's different from a CPU?Thanks in advance

An APU simply includes the GPU and CPU in one package. If I'm not mistaken, the A10 6800 is top of the line at the moment. Kaveri will soon be it's succesor.

If your brother knows his stuff, then get him a gift certificate to his favourite hardware store.
