Tried both the 13.301.1001 and 14.2 Beta drivers. Tried both the conventional Catalyst installation method as well as going to device manager and updating the driver manually by pointing to the inf files.

Using either method of installation, the conclusion of the installation of the AMD Catalyst drivers causes the computer to lock up. Video output ceases once the lockup occurs. Monitor reports no signal upon lockup.

I have to do a hard shutdown by flipping off the switch at the back of my PSU, in order to restart. Upon booting back into Windows 8.1, the display adapter has reverted back to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Things I've tried:

-Updating to latest motherboard BIOS

-Reducing RAM speed to 1600

Details:

OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

CPU: A10-7850K

Motherboard: MSI A78M-E45 (Latest BIOS v25.2)

RAM: ADATA XPG V2 Series 8GB 2x4GB DDR3 2400 Gold

Quick update.

I've also tried different DDR3 DIMMs from another functional system. No substantive change in behavior. Occasionally, the drivers will complete the installation. But upon booting into Windows the next time, a crash is experienced within 5-10 minutes.

No issues at all if the Catalyst drivers are not installed.

Installed Windows 7 SP1 x64 as a test. Catalyst drivers install successfully. No system instability after the installation of the Catalyst drivers.

Appears to be isolated to Windows 8 and 8.1.

Your problem might be Secure Boot settings in your motherboard's BIOS to work only with signed WHQL drivers under Windows 8/8.1.

Secure Boot is disabled in the BIOS. Regardless, the installation fails in Windows 8 when attempting to install the WHQL signed 13.301.1001 drivers as well.
