I recently loaded Linux as my defaut OS, after replacing my obsolete, on-board graphics with a FirePro V4900.

When I loaded the proprietary AMD driver, I got an "Unsupported Hardware" watermark on the screen. With the open source driver, printing was illegible (it worked with the Radeon 3200 on-board graphics).

From what I see on AMD's site, there is no proprietary Linux driver for the V4900. Am I correct? If so, which desktop card would be most comparable? I'm not a big gamer: I do normal, office-type stuff; surf the web; edit photos and videos; watch the occasional movie (DVD and streaming); and run Folding@Home. I may decide to load a flight simulator in a Windows partition or VM at some point.

Thanks for your help.

There is a Proprietary driver for the V4900 in Linux, available at by filling out the appropriate drop-down options (namely Workstation Graphics->FirePro 3D Series->FirePro V4900->Linux x86_64) . This suite, 12.104.2, will be the latest WHQL release for our supported Linux distributions (RHEL 6.3, SLED/SLES 10SP4/11SP2, OpenSUSE 11.4/12.1 and Ubuntu 11.10/12.04/12.10).

If you are still getting the watermark, let us know, as that should only be present for the Beta releases, not the WHQL suites.

Hi Kent,

Can you say anything about when the supported OS list will be updated for the FirePro / workstation cards? Ubuntu 11.10 and 13.04 are out of support, and 12.10 doesn't have long left (april 2014). 12.04 is LTS, and so has some life left, but it's now very old and many have moved on. More info on that at
