I realise that this is the first driver for said card,

First impressions. At least we have a driver for *nix

  It works, kinda,

Did the usual stuff run Valley/Heaven  benchmark in Linux And win.

This is to get a comparison as it were, Now am not expecting A1 perf out the box for linux, especially as the 290-non x is round the corner + BF4 released. Your gona concentrate on that fist. As should, side note, bought the BF4 edition

However, (one for the devs to look at )

On my current monitor 1680 x 1050 (Dont panic people, 2 HD monitors inbound  )

All max settings (Valley)

Linux (x86_64):

FPS:
20.5
Score:
858
Min FPS:
11.1
Max FPS:
36.6

Windows 7 (x86_64)

FPS:
58.8
Score:
2459
Min FPS:
20.6
Max FPS:
102.8

That's less than half. I've no idea if its a Valley benchmark issue or not.

Also watching a youtube vid full screen grinds it to a slide show, same with a DVD film.

On a positive note LFD2 / X3 series + Wargame : EE and various others run fine, which is odd when you look at the previous benchmark scores

Any AMD dev shed some insight/suggestions ? When is the driver likely see some lovin?

Specs

Mageia 3 (x86_64)

Gigabyte 890fxa-ud5 MB

x6 1090t CPU

R9-290c CG

16Gb Mem (corsair)

750x PSU.

AMD seems to have put linux higher on the priority list these days. That's good news for you. I bet you'll have decent drivers in a few months. Just be a bit patient and use windows for gaming for now. There are no linux exclusives yet, so it can be done.

Am not disputing that, Just bought Metro:LL works quite well, not top perf but playable.

Certainly better than BF4 does at the mo That's got serious problems!

I too have a R9-290X running on ubuntu 12.04 64bit using the latest beta; however I have had little to no problems.  Everything just works!

I have Metro LL maxed out and it plays smooth on all levels.  The surface level with the storm on the bridge is perhaps the most gpu intense but even there I'm averaging 30 to 50 FPS.

I have published my Unigine benchmarks.  The links are on post 22 and 26 of this thread... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2183281&page=3

Bare in mind this is the first driver of AMD for this chip.  It will only get better!  I was also able to tweak the Heaven performance through Catalyst.  The details are on that link above.

To be honest I think its my cpu thats bottle necking on metro, It's flat out 100% usage all the time on all 6 cores while playing metro,(1090T clocked to 3600)

I went from a 5870 to the 290x also, The difference is HUGE as youve proberbly noticed your self

Regard valley/heaven. I dont use PTS,  Heaven/valley have there own scoring system. Post scores with these Presets,

Heaven 4, select extrem prese. Then run

Valley 1, select extreme HD Then run.

Do a screen shot of the benchmarks when the run has finished. Then compare/post

Do that on *nix and win and you'll see the perf difference.

Now am not getting at AMD devs, I am pointing out the performace difference.

I know DX/OpenGL there is a slight difference but not that much.

Like you though, I too have wargame:EE flat out, L4D2 flat out and what not with no problem. Metro is slow but I am leaning toword CPU doing that now. But Heaven4 is not cpu bound, valley is to a point I admit.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the next beta driver and hopefully dramatically better improvements!

Rome Total War II is coming within 6-12weeks!
