I am having issues with latest catalyst drivers. My system is Acer Aspire 5553g with Mobility Radeon HD 5650 discrete GPU and Mobility Radeon HD 4200 internal GPU. From 13.4 and newer catalyst dropped support for my internal GPU. So I am unable to compilte fglrx with "Switchable" mode of graphic card in BIOS. But when I am switching BIOS settings to "Discrete" graphics I think it should compile and work fine. With OSS driver it says that I am using 5650 HD graphics. I am able to compilte fglrx module. But Xorg never starts... The last driver that is working properly for me was 13.1. I tried several OS like Ubuntu, Debian, Mageia, Arch. Currently I am on openSUSE and I know the problem is in the driver. I don't know why. But it's just not working on my system.. I've created bug reports in community bug tracking system. I've written tickets to support. Over and over. No answers what so ever.. It's already a 13.11 beta and the bug persists. May be someone knows this issue and can help me here.

Hi,

Where able to fix this problem already?

I have the same problem, same grafic card 5650. I had mine working in mint 13 (similar os to ubuntu 12.04) and decided to upgrade my os. Back in that os i was able to use fglxr untill Catalyst 13.3 beta3, after that everything clashed my system also had to set to discrete on my bios. So i've decided to upgrade to mint 16, and also tried others ubuntu 13.10 32 and 64 bit and 13.04 and everything i've got is a black screen like yours after grub.

Tried nomodset, switchable and discrete and other stuff and no luck. I've run out of ideas, have you got any luck?

Acer doesn't list linux as a supported OS for that laptop. Only Win7 x64. Maybe there is some correlation. The IGP is customized and linux wasn't considered when they did it.

Mine is not that laptop.

Also the grafic card is suported, at least is what they say. In the latest beta page "ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5600 Series" is shown... Also catalyst/fglrx worked before in ubuntu 12.04/mint13 til beta3 of catalyst13.3.

Also IGP as probably nothing to do with it, because i use the discrete option in BIOS, so i only use the dedicated card.

Hi, there. I have similar graphic cards configuration: 5650 and 4250. But this is a HP dv6 3160us... and has no BIOS switching option.

I tried almost everything... and I'm tired, really tired and no time to go on trying things.

I never could use 5650 discrete card, NEVER. When trying, only black boot screen (or some boot text, too). Only once, I could boot on that card, using vgaswitcheroo... but it was slower than 4250 with proprietary drivers (I need 3D acceleration).

The driver that works OK with 4250 is 12.4, on Ubuntu 12.04. Older drivers had artifacts, newer's don't support 4250... but neither the 5650.

Does anybody know something about this laptop?

Well.. This is funny. I've tested the latest released driver 13.12 on my windows 7 installation. I've cleared all previously installed drivers and install latest. After reboot windows is not using amd graphics driver and stays on 800 on 600 resolution. It seems like windows thinks drivers later then 13.1 are not compatible with my 5650 discrete video card. I think if I write in Acer support they'll suggest to use their driver which is pretty old and works fine on Win7. So I can confirm that the issue persist at windows 7 too. The only difference is that windows is capable of create video output in some kind of safe mode but in linux you get system hang on.

Laptop cards need their special, customized drivers even under windows. Something Acer can provide you.

I has the same laptop: acer 5553g with ati 5650 + 4250. I can't use fglrx driver from 13.4 version too. I tested with Ubuntu and Opensuse, Switchable or Discrete mode but no luck at all. In the release note AMD said that they support 5xxx mobility, but they don't.

Like i thought that's a bug that has been happening since Catalyst 13.3 beta 3.

I've found this: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=831

What 've done was downgrade Xserver and Kernel and installed that one. It would be great if Amd solved that problem, but at least i have fglrx working now: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=831#c10
