In the Windows forum I found people was having the same problem as I was. I have flicker/black screen with my XFX R9-270X-CDFR. I tried 13.11 & 13.12 in Windows 7 sp1 x64, & in Ubuntu based Pinguy OS 13.04. Drivers makes no difference. I found this forum checked XFX's site for a vbios update. They had a update & I installed it. I was happy & then 2 hours latter it started doing it again. I contacted them & made a service ticket. With it being the week of Christmas I don't expect to hear back anything this week.

This is from the Windows forum about this.

Hi ppl, I want to talk with you about flickering problem on R9 270x graph.cards. Many of you know that this problem is related with all R9 serie cards like 270x,280X, oc,not oc,vapor, dualx. All brands like Asus, sapphire,MSI and others have the same problem.

That flickering we can descirbe like shaking screen up down randomly, especialy when we using browsers like Chrome,Mozila or IE, watching movies.

Good news is that some manufacturers like MSI and sapphire admit error and they release new vbios for this card. Asus dont want to change anything in vbios bcs they thinking that driver can resolve the problem, but w8 maybe it is possible. We can alone change 2D clock in CCC profile to be core/mem 300/300 and fix the problem, but that is not final resolution and that is only temporary fix. Using new drivers with bugged vbios is totaly insane.

I must thaks to Korean manufacturers who made FLICKER free bios for Sapphire and MSI 270X cards, and bcs they admit error. Asking myself, why is too hard for someone to admit mistake. Bcs of all this events I want to hear what AMD thinking about this and want to hear , "yea we did mistake and we will force all other manufacturer to edit  and provide new vbios for all cards with flickering problem".

Where's the CCC profiles location in Ubuntu?

Update: I played around with the settings & it's better, but It still does it. I've also noticed minor twitching in some game menus.

AMD support is complete crap. I'm starting to question my decision to go with AMD.

Getting this in Windows & Linux randomly is really starting to piss me off.

It seems to have quit doing this when I stopped using the builtin HDMI sound & stated using my old Soundblaseter sound card. Mine was doing this in Linux & Windows 7 x64. So try using a external sound card. Hope this helps you out, because it drove me crazy.

I would try it & see. It worked for me. To make sure it wasn't my video card I put it in my son's newly built computer for a month & he had no issues with it using the video cards audio play Battlefield 4 24/7. What made me notice the audio was, when I got my card back from my son. I put it in & completely forgot about AMD's HDMI audio. I left my Soundblaster Audigy 2 as the default sound device & it worked fine for 1.5 months. I installed Thief & noticed I still had the Soundblaster as the default sound device, so I took out it out & started using the R9's HDMI audio so I could see how the 3d audio sounded in Thief. Within 1 hour my flickering was back in Windows & linux. So I played around with it for 2 days to see if it would magically go away. Sadly I ended up putting the Soundblaster back in, & the problem is once again gone. I also tried a new HDMI cable with no luck.

Here's my PC spec's
