Dear all,

A couple of days ago I installed ubuntu alongside windows 7. My grahpics card is an asus 7970. When I go to the driver section on the AMD site. There is an 64-bit version and a 32-bit version (my version is 64-bit). So I installed the 64-bit version. Installing went ok, with some errors but not significant. after an reboot and login I only get a black screen no GUI. I went to the commandline and uninstalled the driver and went back to the default driver.

When I looked in the discription on the amd website along the drivers. There is this sentence: "32-Bit packages must be installed for 64-Bit Linux drivers to install or work."

So I have 2 questions:

1. Which driver do I have to install to let my system work properly?

2. What does that sentence mean? What do I have to do?

I hope I made clear what my problem is and thanks in advanced!

That sentence is old and outdated. Ubuntu went multiarch a while ago. What you should do is forgetting about the AMD binary installer and install drivers from a PPA. Xorg-Edgers for example. (Google it.)
