I've been beating my head against the wall with this one for a while. (About one week a month for 5 months, LOL. Basically all my free time :/) Long story short, I am putting together a mining rig. People have successfully used 6... 7 GPUs with my motherboard. It seems I have problems with multiple cards. As you can see below it really depends which cards I plug into my mobo.

Graphics Card

  • (2) HIS 7950 IceQ H795QC3G2M: 1070MHz 1500MHz cgminer 3.7.2
  • (2) HIS 7970 IceQX2 H797QMC3G2M: ??? and n/a (system down and apart ATM, but was stable going 4+ weeks using cgminer 3.7.2)
  • (2) XFX DD 7950 FX-795A-TDK V2.0:  1200MHz 1575MHz cgminer 3.7.2
  • (2) HIS 7950 IceQ H795Q3G2M: 1070MHz 1500MHz cgminer 3.7.2
  • (1) HIS 7970 IceQX2 H797QM3G2M: n/a
  • I have more but those are involved in the current working and test configurations.
Configuration(1) - Working
  • (1) HIS 7970 IceQX2 H797QMC3G2M - x16 slot, watercooled
  • (2) HIS 7950 IceQ H795QC3G2M - x16 slot, watercooled
  • (2) XFX DD 7950 FX-795A-TDK V2.0 - x1 slot, x1-x16 powered riser, aircooled
Configuration(2) - Working / Also not working (dependent on which H795Q3G2M)
  • (1) HIS 7970 IceQX2 H797QMC3G2M - x16 slot, watercooled
  • (2) HIS 7950 IceQ H795QC3G2M - x16 slot, watercooled

  • (2) HIS 7950 IceQ H795Q3G2M - x1 slot, x1-x16 powered riser, aircooled
Configuration(4) - Not working (w/ "good" H795Q3G2M)
  • (1) HIS 7970 IceQX2 H797QMC3G2M - x16 slot, watercooled

Issue Details
- include specifics on symptoms, and steps to reproduce the issue
- describe in detail the issue experienced

  • I have displayed all splash screens and enabled a very verbose boot. Boot between "working" and "not working" appear identical. The difference I see is when X begins. Either my computer makes it to desktop and works or just hangs. In the case of hanging, the monitor indicates no signal is being transmitted, watt meters increase to ~270 and ~100 watts, cards get warm, no KB input possible.
  • There was one instance where configuration #2 seemed to work. X began but one GPU appeared to not be able to do any work. That was not the first attempt to start X. The first one or two hung. The next "worked." All subsequent attempts didn't work.
  • I have had six cards running but my PSU at the time was not adequate. Also, air flow was not adequate. It was a XFX 7970 slower than my HIS 7950s mining. I have also had a configuration with only two cards that didn't work. My Gigabyte 7970 GHz Edition with any other card would not work.
  • Although XFX 7950s are faster than HIS 7950s, they are not reference PCBs. System Goal: 7 watercooled GPUs w/ full coverage blocks
  • It has been a frustrating journey. I'm not sure if the log below helps shed any light. I'm just posting the one that worked. The one that didn't work made several uki- calls and then seemed to hang waiting for a response. The line with '... 8, (OK)' never appeared around the 11.4 second mark. But the card it seemed to be waiting for a response on already successfully responded a couple of times (PCI 3:0:0).

Additional Details

When determining my X version (literally at cmdline: [$prompt] X -version) it looks like X is compiled for a different linux kernel (2.6.42-37) then my current OS (3.2.0-56). The specific words are "build operating system" and "current operating system."

That's awesome. For a sec, I actually thought I could get some help and move on.

FWIW, look into currency. You'll probably find that it isn't so crazy after all.

Would xrandr be any help

I take it all you relly want is one working screen to controll all these cards, and it should let you choose/set that and turn the others off as X displays

Has anyone else done similar on ASRock motherboards?

Aps if you've already done this, but maybe some cards just don't get along together or in certain slots.

Alternatively, if they are new, then faulty card?  I've just spent weeks chasing doen a faulty Gigavyte 7790 that went flaky under load. Note helped by updated drivers all the time.
