Hi,

i recently updated to current versions of chrome/chromium on my Debian (sid) installation. This more or less immediately crashes the X serrver, and the kernel log contains the following message, indicating a problem in the fglrx driver:

Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_evergreen.c at line: 69

This message has been around for quite a while when searching in the web, but i could not find a solution.

The same happens rarely when running other OpenGL based applications.

Any help would be appreciated. Below is some version informtion, if there is anything else i should provide please let me know.

Thanks,

Felix.

uname -a
Linux hera 3.14-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.14.7-1 (2014-06-16) x86_64 GNU/Linux

fglrxinfo:
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.4.12967 Compatibility Profile Context 14.20

X server:
X.Org X Server 1.15.1
Release Date: 2014-04-13

Driver version from xorg.log:
[343068.932] (II) AMD Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:14.20.7
[343068.932] (II) AMD Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: UNSUPPORTED-14.20
[343068.932] (II) AMD Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: May 22 2014 21:17:03

I had the same issue with older kernels/drivers, but i can't say exactly which ones.

Do you also see errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log after a crash?

It looks like the browser is trying to use OpenGL to accelerate rendering and there's a threading issue somewhere. I suggest you report the issue (along with as much details as you can provide, including logs) and as a workaround, turn off hardware acceleration in the browser settings.

Ok, thanks, i just submitted the issue using the link.

However, in the end it tells me that this is just a survey and support requests are not replied to ... i'll just wait and see what happens ..

Funny that other applications making heavy use of OpenGl and OpenCL work fine.

Sure, they can fix it without replying. If you need to talk to them, not only to submit a bug report, you can contact AMD Customer Care.
