HP Pavilion Elite HPE-350t CTO with the I7 CPU.

The motherboard is MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E). The power supply was replaced with a larger supply when the fan on the original started making noise. Instead of the original 350w, it's a 500w with a 1x6 plug for the video card.

The computer was ordered with the Radeon 5770 Video card. I see it's PCIe x16 gen 2.1.

Some of the AMD video cards are gen 3.0. Can I use one of those or am I limited to 2.1

What choice do I have? My college age son needs a better video card for a new video game he just got.

With a 500w PSU with only a 1x6 PCIe connector, I cannot see any meaningful upgrade (as a card which you would be able to see a difference with.) Upgrade to a reputable brand (SeaSonic, Enermax, Corsair, Sapphire, PC P&C) of 650w-750w, and you can get the very capable and well priced Radeon 270X.

As for PCIe, it will work fine in a PCIe 2.1 board.
