I am looking to upgrade my processor which is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.40GHz. I'm not looking for a state of the art processor, but one that is better than what I currently have. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Is it the socket 939 or am2 version? If its am2, you should check maybe the motheboard has socket am2+, if this is the case, you could try to get a second hand Phenom II, if it isn't then, overclocking is your best bet of gaining performance (or assembling a whole new machine). If you don't know which socket you have, just give your motherboards manufacturer and model.

And if you do build a whole new rig, I would highly recommend an APU setup. Assuming you are running Windows 7 already, and you re-use your case, power supply, drives, and monitor, you're looking at under $200.
