As a result of a BSOD caused, probably, by my AHCI driver, I've a few questions that I hope you can help me with:

1) Latest reliable driver?

Is the latest AHCI driver (ahcix64s.sys) version 3.8.1540.14, dated 07/10/2013 21:14?

if not, what is the latest (reliable) version (for Windows 8.1 64 bit), andwhere can I download it from?

2) Installation

if 3.8.1540.14 is the latest, then I have a copy of it located at C:\AMD\Support\14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\SB8xx\RAID\W864A – but according to Device Manager, I'm still using version 3.8.1540.3 (at C:Windows\system32\DRIVERS\ahcix64x.sys).

Am I correct in thinking that I can simply update this by using the “Update Driver” button on Device Manager, using the “locate and install driver software manually” option to point to the location of the latest version?

Background information

The background to this is that WhoCrashed identified ahcix64s.sys (AMD AHCI Compatible Controller Driver) as “the probable root cause” of a BSOD.

I've updated Catalyst to version 14.4, which I thought included an updated ACHI driver. However, as mentioned above, it's not in use, and http://support.amd.com/de-de/download/desktop?os=Windows+8 says:

“AMD has received feedback that some users are unable to install the Catalyst 14.4 driver on some motherboards with AMD chipsets. We have investigated the issue and have determined that it was caused by the AHCI driver component that was included with the driver package.

We have therefore removed the AHCI driver component from the driver package and will be providing it as a separate download.”

...however I can't locate this separate download anywhere on the AMD site.

I also gather from the above (and from http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=454&threadid=173414), that some people have been experiencing problems with (the most recent version?) of the AHCI driver.

So, I'm not sure:

a) whether I have the lastest (or a recent reliable version of the file), nor

b) why (since I've updated Catalyst) the more recent version of ahcix64s.sys isn't already in use.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated!

1) Get them from your motherboard manufacturer
2) Install them using the setup from your motherboard manufacturer

Newer drivers do not give any performance increase over previous drivers.

black_zion, thanks for the suggestion - but unfortunately the latest drivers from Asus for my motherboard don't include an updated AHCI driver.

stumped, thanks for the link. I've downloaded the files (which are compatible with my motherboard) and that confirms that 3.8.1540.14 is the latest driver. Since it wasn't automatically installed by running the downloaded, I've now installed it manually. I'm now hoping that will have fixed the BSOD issue...

And thanks to both of you for responding at lighting speed!

You don't need the latest drivers, which is why I said get them from your motherboard manufacturer. Even MSAHCI.sys that ships with Windows gives the same performance as AMD drivers.

Hi black_zion

I'm not expecting better performance, just hoping to avoid another BSOD in which the AHCI driver is implicated.

Which is why if you get them from ASUS or use the standard Windows driver, which is OLDER and STABLE, you won't have BSODs because of the driver will you?
