Hello,

I've just purchased a new Alienware m17x with an R9 290x card.   I can see the card listed when I check my system specs, however whenever I try and update my drivers to 14.4., after install is complete the card is recognized as an HD 8970m.  If I uninstall the driver my system then reverts back to R9 290x.  I tried an older driver as well and still got the same result.  Anyone else experience this?  I am running win 8.1 x64.  I haven't changed or updated anything else.  Comp is out of box.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Laptop users should use the drivers provided by their OEM, in this case Dell.

Given how dodgy drivers have been from both contestants, unless you have a new game that does not work, no need for a new driver

I use 13.12 with my M4A77D box, some red drivers bricked that box which has only various versions of Windows on it

The mobility 290x is a rebranded 8970m. As long as you use the intial drivers, it will read 290..when you 'update' with generic drivers it will read 8970m. No worries.
