Hi guys, Newbie here.

So i havent played games on my laptop for a while. Im currently over seas so i decided to download a graphics driver update (14.4) to play some games. The driver i had said it was dated to the 2012 update.

I had Downloaded a Mobility 14.4 DD-CCC-WHQL pacakge (i just know its a pacakge, all i know CCC is catalyst control centre. i dont know what the others are).

When i went to Device manager > Display adapters > driver details, it did say i had version 9.xxxx. Id imagine its meant to change to 14.4. but it never changed.

I right clicked ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 series (in display adapters) and went uninstall to try and do a somewhat clean install and then rebooted. When windows boots up, a window would pop up saying its finding/installing a driver (just like a simple pnp device). Now it says my driver version had back peddled to 8.850.0.0 dated all the way back to 19/04/2011.

I have tried uninstalling the driver (it would revert back to 800x600) then tried installing the 14.4 driver witout rebooting. still the same old 2011 update.

I had multiple ATI, AMD, ATI TEchnology folders from C:\ and Program Files which i thought id just leave in the rubbish bin that i thought my laptop was getting the old updates from.

Any help would be appreciated on what is happening. Or how to correctly update/install drivers.

Cheers.

EDIT: Just adding system specs.

You might want to read this ... Asus black screen. If you have this issue, report it!! then use the 13.4 drivers.

I guess I've been doing the "Normal installation". Ive always been paranoid with cleaning utility programs which is why i dont do "clean installations". Maybe i'll give it a go when i go back to Australia, bandwidth is pretty bad here in the Philippines to effectively download anything.

And im aware of the Asus black screens. I remember trying to update the driver a year ago to 13.2 where i first experienced it. Luckily windows autamatically created a restore point for me to revert back to. I had a copy of that version here on my laptop which windows automatically installed after i freshly unistalled the graphics driver. Oh the memories of panic i had... haha.

Im feeling kind of doubtful about 13.4 though..

You shouldn't have to do a clean install...follow the guide for a 'normal' install. Use these drivers....here. Download them to your desktop. These allow you to bypass the mobility compatibility check.
